Normally a great transformer, but not bullet proof. It can fail. Repairs are costly and must be performed by MTH, the manufacturer.

Pros: I owned two Z4000 transformers that performed flawlessly for 5 years each. Lots of power. Perfect to run with MTH DCS system. I ran 4 trains and over 100 lights / accessories at once with two Z4000's. Cons: I have had two Z4000 transformers fail in the last 30 days. Both suffered failures of costly components such as computer boards.

Great Controller When it Works, but Good Luck Getting Parts If It Fails...

Bought this one used, so I'm not sure how old it is or how many hours are on it, but it appeared to be in great shape. Used it for two weeks with no issue, but then it stopped working; after turning it on, it would light up and the fan would just start to spin, and then shuts down. Given its possible age, I'd give it a higher rating, but the control board is $130+ bucks if you can find one at all, and the power board (which I think is the actual failure point in this case) is unavailable. Such being the case, if you buy one and it fails, there's a good chance you have yourself a 400+ dollar paperweight. Shame the parts support isn't there, as these are great controllers when they work properly. I need a pure sinewave controller for my old PS1 locomotives, and there just isn't much newer stuff out there that offers that, and this was THE top choice in that case. Now I'm just refurbing a classic Lionel ZW 275 workhorse that I'll have to add bell control to. Oh, well.

  • MTH z4000 Juice for choo choo train.

I’ve been very happy so far. I was worried with the external circuit breakers I would have to reset them every time I have a derailment. They haven’t tripped yet. The bell button using Lionel stuff is a little intermittent . Other then that I have no complaints. It feels and operates like a well built transformer. I really like the digital volts and amps meters. I would recommend this to anybody with a mid to large layout. Also like the fixed voltage accessory terminals.

  • Very fine transformer.

Precise control, more than ample power, allows access to ProtoSound features on my PS2 engines. Fast-acting circuit breaker. Good size, too.

  • Awesome transformer

This transformer make MTH engines run much better and way easier to control the special feature. If you have MTH engines, you need this transformer.

  • Buy a Z400 be happy.

Great transformer, I tried the bigMRC dual control and went back. Better power and the MTH Loco's seem to have much better sound with it. Make sure to buy one made in 2003 or later as the earlyer units have more issues with stray voltage but still work fine for DCS.. I know several people who have had unit for 20 years with no issues. These are generally very hearty and have good resale as they last and last.

  • MTH z4000 Review

So far so good. No issues. I love the fact that I can see how many amps are being used. This will allow me to ensure I have enough power to add more engines.
