Frank Baum's enduring tales of Oz. Shady illusionist Oscar Diggs (James Franco) enchants curious audiences at a Kansas circus. A self-professed con man, he's a fast-talking performer who aspires to follow in the footsteps of inventors like Thomas Edison. Oscar is being chased across the circus grounds by the rampaging Strongman when a tornado blows in and everyone runs for cover. Seeing a hot-air balloon as his only chance for escape, the illusionist jumps in and cuts himself free. Magically transported to the wondrous world of Oz, he soon encounters Theodora (Mila Kunis), a temperamental witch who surmises that he is the wizard named after their land (Oscar's nickname is Oz), foretold to fall from the sky, defeat a nasty witch, and ascend to the throne. Theodora takes Oscar to the Emerald City to meet her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), a powerful witch who reveals that he cannot become the rightful ruler of Oz until he's accomplished his mission. Later, as Oscar and his new flying-monkey companion Finley (voice of Zach Braff) prepare to face their fearsome enemy, they're joined by the fragile but fearless China Girl (voice of Joey King) and benevolent witch Glinda the Good (Michelle Williams), who help them prepare for the arduous battle ahead. Great DVD. Very good quality image. But the problem is, playing the dvd in 3D is impossible unless you have a 3d TV and #D Blu-ray, which appears to be a thing of the past. Other than that, I am happy with the purchase. I can still play in 2D. Good movie!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

The Third Act is Brilliant
Even though James Franco is horribly miscast as the Wizard, Sam Raimi was a miserable choice in Director, and poor Mila Kunis can't quite pull off the screen presence necessary for the Wicked Witch -- it's a harmless, cute movie that was made due to the stroke of genius that makes up the third act. It's a sad misfire of a film, which had it a better leading man, less CGI, and a director capable of bringing believability to the screen (*everything, EVERYTHING looks movie-set fake or CGI cartoon)...it would have been amazing, instead of "meh".Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

The movie would not play past half of the video, I tried numerous times to skip the chapter and ejecting and re-inserting the disc and the kept stopping in the same spot. My children and I just watched the original “Wizard of Oz” and we were very disappointed that we weren’t able to watch this entire movie. A worthy update of a timeless classic!
Okay, it's pretty hard to re-do a classic like the Wizard of Oz, so why try? This is more of an origin tale, as has become the rage lately.
