About this product

Product Information

Trevor Nunn's version of William Shakespeare's classic comedy revolves around Viola, a young woman who disguises herself as a man to work as a page in the court of Count Orsino. Orsino is hopelessly in love with a woman named Olivia, and soon Viola finds herself hopelessly in love with Orsino. But Orsino thinks she's a man, and her predicament worsens when she realizes that Olivia has fallen in love with her. Nunn's film sets the play in the 19th Century and brings out both the ebullient and the melancholy aspects of Shakespeare's story.

  • Fantastic production of an excellent Shakespeare play

First, the product was as described and in excellent condition. As to the movie itself, this is one of my all-time favorites. Toby Stephens is very handsome as Duke Orsino, and Helena Bonham Carter is lovely as Olivia. I've watched this numerous times already, and I've enjoyed the interviews in the Special Features. It's clear this production was an act of love by actors who are devoted to Shakespeare. Although it's not one of the most commonly performed plays, I think it's one of the best. And I appreciate that the number of lovers involved is limited to a manageable number.

  • Perhaps my favorite Shakespeare movie REGION 1 DVD is best

A great cast with Ben Kingley, Helena Bonham Carter, and some lesser-known actors who are equally fine. The film is the quintessential light-hearted Shakespeare story of confused identities and troubled frustrated romances. This is a movie I can watch multiple times. So quality was important to me. I tried the Asian version. Poor image quality. They didn't even get the title correct -- on the DVD it is billed as "Twelve Nights" instead of Twelfth Night. Obviously little care was put into that release. I tried the UK release. It looks to me like it was sourced from a laserdisc -- better picture quality than the Asian release, but it is full screen (4:3) format letterboxed with black bars at the top and bottom. Finally I bought the region 1 US release, and it is widescreen anamorphic 16:9 with no black bars top and bottom. Image quality is still not the best one could hope for, but it is the best available at this point. Unfortunately the US release is out of print and costs somewhat more than the UK or Asian releases. Your choice will depend on how much you like Shakespeare and how tolerant you are of substandard disc mastering. For the US Region 1 release is the only one for me. I should note that none of the releases seem to have subtitles. It's sad that they neglected this, especially with Shakespeare. It would be five stars if the image quality was absolute top notch and they didn't neglect the subtitles. So one star subtracted for that reason.

  • LOVE IT

Loved finding this on DVD as it is rare. But was disappointed to find it wasn’t closed captioned as I am hard of hearing. STILL LOVE IT, just at a louder volume 🤩🤩🤩
