But when the Trojan Hector kills Achilles' close friend Patroclus, he storms back into battle to take revenge - although knowing this will ensure his own early death. I am the son of a great man. A goddess was my mother.
The story of Troy, written down by Homer in the 8th century BCE is a story which echoes throughout time. Epic poetry like this is captivating. The tale of the argument between Achilles and Agamemnon, resulting in the tragic death of Patroclus, and the completion of the Divine prophecies about Hector and Achilles, aches the heart still, 3,000 years after it was first written down, and untold centuries after it was first sung by minstrels like Homer.
So far as we know, the Illiad is the first novel ever written down. What a great start to the fine literary tradition that exists today. Magnificent!
