About this product

Product Information

The NEC TurboGrafx-16, also known as the PC Engine in Japan and France, is a video game console that was released by NEC and Hudson Soft in 1989. It was the first console to be able to read game data off of a CD attachment. The TurboGrafx-16 could also read game data off of special HuCards. The primary focus of the NEC TurboGrafx-16 console was to enable the release of Hudsonsoft homeports of their popular arcade titles. However, there were many original titles released as well, most notably the pack-in games "Bonk" and "Blazing Lazers." The NEC TurboGrafx-16 is built around a Hudson Soft HuC6280 8-bit microprocessor operating at 1.79 MHz for HuCard games and 7.16 MHz for CD-based games. It is supplemented by a 16-bit graphics processor and video encoder chip along with 8 KB of work RAM and 64 KB of video RAM. This enables the TurboGrafx-16 to display a total of 512 colors, with up to 482 on screen at any point in time. The TurboGrafx-16 has a maximum resolution of 565x242 pixels, which is transmitted over RCA plug cables in NTSC format. The system displays up to 64 on-screen sprites at a time, with 16 sprite pixels per scan line, for up to 256 pixels per sprite. Because it is able to display up to 15 colors per sprite, the system produces some impressive graphics. Audio is processed through the HuC6280A CPU, and the system is capable of six-wavetable synthesis, giving the system six voices simultaneously. Since the system does not have region protection for CD-based games, any such titles are played on any system. The system has a single controller port that is expandable to up to six controllers. Its controller has a D-pad, start button, select button, and two action buttons. Since the PC Engine has the same system architecture as the later Turbo Duo, it can play all Turbo Duo games via the CD attachment. Some games make use of both the PC Engine CD reader and HuCard to provide superior sound or video cut scenes.

Great underrated and overlooked retro console.

The Turbografx 16 has an 8-bit main processor and a 16-bit graphics processor. This gives the Turbografx 16 games a distinctive look and feel. Think somewhere between NES and SNES. Sidescrolling platforming games are bright and colorful, and the system excels in the shooter genre. Games like Blazing Lazers look and play wonderfully, and with the 16-bit graphics processor, there is none of the classis NES "slowdown" when there are a lot of sprites on the screen. The controller also has built in adjustable turbo, which is actually required at different times in certain games. A great hidden gem of a classic console.

  • 1989 in a box.

By the time I owned one of these in the early 90s, it was already discontinued and games were scarce. Now with the World Wide Web, it’s game on for the TG-16! Games are reasonably priced and eBay is rife with them. Opening the box with its hot orange, pink and black color scheme just feels like the late 80s...it’s a 16 bit-ish console with almost an entire library of exclusives lost in time and TG-16 only arcade ports of the time. If you collect late 80s video games and consoles, this is a must. Don’t think about it, BUY it.

  • Keep the system in its original state!

This system is not only a rarity as well as a gem! I have noticed that several merchants are "modding" the original RF connection to 3 way RCA hookups. I DO NOT recommend this as it depletes the originality of the vintage system. To avoid a snowy picture purchase a "Gold Coax Cable" along with an "RF Adapter" both item are roughly about a $9 investment. Thus you receive a crystal clear picture if not BETTER than the RCA modded systems. It also enables you to keep the system in its original state.

  • Essential for collectors!

One of the most under appreciated game consoles of all time, the TG16 had a short life. But is you’re a fan of side scrolling action or shooters this will be a great system for you. You’ll also find some quirky genres like pinball on here. Some good games to pick up would be the Bonk series, Alien Crush & Devils Crush (pinball), Blazing Lazers, Neutopia (think Zelda), Dungeon Explorer (Gauntlet), & Military Madness (turn based strategy). Those will get you collection started off right. And if you a fan of video game music you can’t go wrong here. The tunes on most TG16 games were catchy & you had them stuck in your head later. Good 16-bit era graphics (with an 8-bit system processor), for the era. The controller just fits in your hand nicely. Turbo buttons were a catchy trend at the time, ...
