    Very useful zoom lens

It's a legacy zoom very well built and quite good image quality. I use it often due to it's very convenient focal distance.

design flaw - now becoming more apparrent with age

This can be a great lens. On an MFT camera it becomes a 150-300mm. But chose carefully as, like lots of old zooms this particular Olympus model is notorious for separation of the lens elements The main problem is usually in the rear group. The main effect of separation is to create an air/glass surface between elements where they were originally cemented together. This is visible from the front of the lens as a bright reflection, especially in coated lenses where the coating suppresses reflections on all of the other air/glass surfaces. The main image effect of separation is due to the reflection, which reduces contrast and increases flare in the image, essentially negating the effect of some of the antireflection coating on the lens. Simple lens designs - such as most fixed "prime" telephotos of the same era are much less likly to have cemented compound lenses - and so age better. Needless to say - there is no home "fix" for separating lens elements. Trying to fix them usually makes it much worse. If there is a little separation at the lens edge - then it may not have a great effect on quality - but in time it is likely to spread. If you can find a good version - note that the first generation "silver nose" type has single coating and the later "black nose" version has multicoating. If you plan to use this on a new Olympus micro 4/3 digital camera note the lens is optically soft at F4 and needs to be at F8 to give sharp images. You also need to be ready for barrel and pincushion distortion correction at each end of the range that can be corrected in most image processing programmes such as Photoshop. At mid -zoom ange the distortion is low. In contrast the 40-150mm new model Olympus digital zoom is good wide open - a gain of 2 stops of light. Sadly - March 2022 - I hoped that I had won a good copy on eBay. This time the problem was a sticky slow aperture mechanism and fortunately I got a refund. This problem is common in all old lenses as lubrication dries out or spreads to the aperture blades. So don't forhet to check this as well (Sellers and buyers!)

  • Great, yet unloved.

Much underrated lens, ignored because everyone wants a prime. In everyday use they are excellent. Zuiko quality, reasonably fast, and inexpensive.

  • cheap and cheerful

excellent zuiko lens no sloppy drop in the zoom. I would rate these second only to Nikon AIS lenses but much cheaper. god to find a fully working one, fast diaphragm release and a zoom that doesn't drop by itself due to wear. great.
