This vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in 1940s Indiana follows nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas--and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. By turns warped and winsome, the comedy follows Ralphie as he prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. Based on the novel by humorist Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the film), A CHRISTMAS STORY gained popularity long after its theatrical run, through frequent holiday broadcasts that turned its schoolyard "triple-dog" dares, family neuroses, and childhood indignities into a Yuletide tradition.

"The Best Christmas Story Ever"
I am partial to the story, because I had a Red Ryder BB gun as a kid, but it certainly is a wonderful part of the story. Peter Billingsley was perfect casting as "Ralphie" Parker, as is Darren McGavin as "the old man" & Melinda Dillion as Mrs. Parker--Let's just say the whole cast is just perfect. I look forward to Xmas to put it in the DVD player--((Get the Blu-ray, not only for the 1080 picture, but for the features which are great, commentary from Billingsley & Director Bob Clark, the Daisy air rifle story, & conversations with the cast, etc.))--or even in the summer for a laugh. My favorite line "it was soap poisoning"--gets me every time!!--Buy it, you won't be sorry......frankjann2012

Bad quality disc. Audio cuts out.
Blu-ray is awful quality. The sound briefly cuts in and out for most of the movie. Extremely annoying. And no, it's not my equipment. None of the other 100s of movies I own do that.

A Chritsmas tradition
This is an excellent Christmas season movie. Full of humor and yet it hits home on many of the experiences we all have fond memories of. And some not so fond memories, like having you mouth washed out with soap, or being tormented by the school bully. Great fun all the way from start to finish. One of our family's traditional "must see" movies for over 40 years.

Such a fun and enjoyable movie
Loved this movie since it came out in the 80s. The characters are loveable and believable. When though somewhat eccentric at times, the are all fun and acceptable. I wanted my own copy so not I can watch when I want when the Christmas bug bites.
