Reviews'there are pages of useful information making this volume the ideal vehicle to introduce the general reader to Tolstoy's epic ... the whole novel is here contained in one single volume ... so well bound that it will lie open at any page - an admirable quality in any book but rare to find in apaperback'Jean Fyfe, Scottish Slavonic Review, No. 20, 1993

SynopsisTolstoy gave his personal approval to this translation of War and Peace, published here in a single volume edition, which includes an introduction by Henry Gifford, and Tolstoy's important essay Some Words about War and Peace., In Russia's struggle with Napoleon, Tolstoy saw a tragedy that involved all mankind. Greater than a historical chronicle, War and Peace is an affirmation of life itself, 'a complete picture', as a contemporary reviewer put it, 'of everything in which people find their happiness and greatness, their grief and humiliation'. • Paperback book

It's an older paperback book with some yellowing of pages. Book itself is in good condition. The cover is not torn nor worn. I bought it for my 11 year old grandson's birthday because when he was 2 he used to carry a book around and when we would ask what he is reading, he would tell us War and Peace.

  • Discipline proceed with haste but do it slowly

The novel has long been at the top of my list despite many attempts over the years to read it. I would read a couple hundred pages, then put it aside. Now I will read it in its entirety , even if it takes the next few weeks or even two months. Tolstoy's sentences are lengthy, sometimes repetitious, but the insights into the characters and human nature are astounding.
