About this product

Product Information

Cross LA BOHČME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle époque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

    About love

Most of the musical numbers are too silly for how serious the storyline is but the chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor makes up for it. I love the inner struggle of Satine as she tries to make the right decision to save the man she loves.

  • Moulin Rouge Review

Moulin Rouge is a disturbing film. There are 2 or 3 scenes that eclipse just about all that I have seen in film. The height of emotional content, color and heart felt acting all focussed into a few musical notes. And yet most of the film, the negative space around these few Everest moments is bizarre and has 'grating' quality to it. Is there something wrong with the director and the actors? To me, it's as powerful and disturbing as the blood seeping from Satine's mouth as she croaks at the end of the film. Weird stuff. Jo Ou

  • WOW and Un-WOW

I am probably one of very few people in the world who was not immediately taken by this film. I thought the begining of the film lacked focus and pourpose. The Plot and character development was confusing at best. I was ready to hit the eject button and make this DVD another coaster. BUT then came the Tango. Perhaps one of the best choreographed and staged and filmed dance sequences of all time. WOW. From there the story started making sence and the characters started coming together and developing. By the end of the film I decided that I only wasted half of my money and half of my time. But the last half is certainly worth its own part. The last half nearly stands alone. I point no fingers and make no blame. Its just that if there had been an intermission before the Tango ...

  • Moulin Rouge

It's Paris in 1899. Christian, a young English poet, comes to Paris to pursue a penniless career as a writer. However, he soon meets a group of Bohemians who tell him that he should write a musical show for them to be performed at the Moulin Rouge, the most famous underworld night club in Paris. The night they arrive at the Moulin Rouge, Christian meets Satine, the club's star and a beautiful courtesan. He falls head-over-heels in love with her and though it takes a bit of convincing, she falls for him as well. Meanwhile, the club's owner, Harold Zidler, invests in a wealthy Duke to help pay for the club, however, the Duke will only pay if Satine is his. This crazy love triangle twists and turns. And little does Satine know that she has a deadly secret that could end everything. Visually ...

  • On time, great price!

The DVD came on time and was in perfect condition. I probably should have given it a 5 star, but I will say that it was not carefully packed. On the other hand, who can expect "high-end" packing for the price I paid. And, to be further fair, it was NOT damaged. I'm changing my rating to 5 stars.
