Read this especially if you had the previous (non-VC) version. I bought this lens because I was looking to replace my all-around lens on a Canon 450D (previously I had the non-IS version of this lens). All my comments are of course related to the specimen I've got; I owned 3 Tamron lenses a total, this one is the second good one (my very first Tamron many years ago was a "lemon"). The good: At F:4.0 and above it's surprisingly sharp; At least the version that I've got. While still audible, the focus motor is not as high pitched as the non-IS version. Covers a very useful focal length for holiday all around lens. Image stabilization does a good job in the 2 F-stops range that it realistically offers and is silent enough. I mean you could easily hear the IS on a 70-200IS L from Canon but you have to pay attention to hear Tamron's VC. It has a metallic bayonet. The bad: none that I can think of... at least not in this price range. Compared to the non-IS version: Apart from the larger barrel you get a feeling of déjà-vu. It really is the same lens on the exterior; plastic feels the same, zoom feels the same, switches are in the same place, optical performance is the same: don't expect to do A2s from F:2.8 cos' you ain't gonna get 'em. Compared to the kit lens that you get by default: a clear improvement in terms of optical quality but definitely bigger and more expensive. Bokeh: usual for all the Tamrons, rather busy and harsh with contours for highlights. Focus: Perfectly OK given the price and the 450D I was testing on. Of course it will hunt a little bit in low contrast situations but so will other lenses. VC: Compared to other IS systems I've worked with, this one has a particular weird feature namely when engaging the VC the image shakes shortly which you will notice in the viewfinder. It never ever bothered me and after a few shots I got used to it but just so that you know. Other than this IS works as expected. Beware of the filter thread: 72MM is rather unusual. Do yourself a favor and purchase an adaptor ring up to 77mm. In doing so you get to the well known 77mm filter thread and you also offer yourself some room to add more filters without vigneting. I tend to use a Cokin filter set and coupled with a polarizer the 77mm adaptor is right on the edge of vigneting. A polarizer and a Cokin will definitely vignette on the 72mm default thread. To sum up, this lens is really about expectations: If you expect this lens to feel and behave like the 24-70 F:2.8 L from Canon you'll be disappointed, it doesn't; in other words if you plan to use it for serious pro work on a 50D or 7D just forget it and go for the more expensive Canons. If OTOH you're looking for an upgrade from the kit lens, a good and relatively cheap all-around holiday lens to mount on a 400D or 450D, well then this is a very good lens! Couple it with the plastic made but optically decent 70-300 F:4 IS II and you get a very serious yet cheap system.Read full review
Good upgrade for the kit lens. Pros: Very good price for performance. Wide aperture. Crisp images. Cons: Non-vc, but not an issue in steady hands or tripod. Chromatic aberration visible in 17mm but not in other focal lengths. Better in all aspects comparing to the kit lens beside the 17mm limit and the lack of image stabilizer.
Highly recommended for both video and photography. I'm a film maker myself and helped me out a lot. Big upgrade from my built in 18-55 on my Canon 550D. very good value for money!
