Questo libro nasce nel 1993 da un'idea di Virgilio Vercelloni, discussa prima che con i curatori (a cui egli stesso ne aveva affidato lo sviluppo), con Giulio Redaelli. Accomunati dal medesimo interesse per i fenomeni dell'urbanesimo e per la progettazione urbanistica (che da quelli non risulta disgiunta), oltreché per le vicende di Milano città di Lombardia, pensarono di far confluire in un organico progetto editoriale una sezione delle proprie ricerche.
