Featherstone's Air War Games Wargaming will be well received for my spring warfare class at Wofford College.
During the spring semester of 2019, I plan to use sections of Donald Featherstone's Air War Games Wargaming Aerial Warfare (1914-1975) for my warfare class. Wofford College created a series of classes for enjoyment in their LifeLong Learning series and I have taught several eight-week classes over the past few years. I taught a warfare class at Spartanburg High School for seventeen years. This class was for seniors who were interested in the History of Warfare. Besides my lectures which covered various aspects of warfare on causes of specific wars and the impact of those wars, as well as the strategy and tactics being employed in those wars. Also, I had guest lecturers from the WWII era through the Vietnam conflict, as well as an F-18 pilot off the USS Saratoga who flew downtown ... During the spring semester of 2019, I plan to use sections of Donald Featherstone's Air War Games Wargaming Aerial Warfare (1914-1975) for my warfare class. Wofford College created a series of classes for enjoyment in their LifeLong Learning series and I have taught several eight-week classes over the past few years. I taught a warfare class at Spartanburg High School for seventeen years. This class was for seniors who were interested in the History of Warfare. Besides my lectures which covered various aspects of warfare on causes of specific wars and the impact of those wars, as well as the strategy and tactics being employed in those wars. Also, I had guest lecturers from the WWII era through the Vietnam conflict, as well as an F-18 pilot off the USS Saratoga who flew downtown Baghdad in 1991. Some of the other guest lecturers included WWII aces - Gen. "Gabby" Gabreski, General Joe Foss, and Memphis Belle (B-17) pilot - Robert Morgan. The wars covered over the course of this class were: The French and Indian War, The American Revolution, The American Civil War, Wars against the Plains Indians, World War I, World War II, The Korean War and the Vietnam War, and some of the Arab-Israeli Wars and the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Also, I use clips from certain war films to show the class a specific event or style of warfare for a particular period of history. Then, the other aspect of the class are my 12' x 6' tabletop wargames that I use to cover a specific period of warfare, such as the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Battle of Britain. Also, I make use of individual aerial combat with five inch WWI aircraft on stands. This is very similar to the Milton Bradley game like DOGFIGHT. But, in this case, I have added the maneuvers and strengths from the ACE-OF-ACES bookcase games. So, as one can see, I plan to use specific ideas from the book to create some new tabletop wargames for my class, which is to be called - BANDITS! 12 O'CLOCK HIGH! This will help in my large "Battle of Britain" and "Fortresses Over the Reich" games. I plan to add jets for "MiG Alley" for the Korean War. Therefore, I hope that this summary meets the criteria for my use of Featherstone's book for my wargame class at Wofford College. Oh yes, since WOfford doesn't understand the logistics needed for my class, I teach it at the AMerican Legion Post #28 in Spartanburg, SC. Whewn I first started doing my classes at Wofford, they wanted me to bring my items to class and set them up, teach the class, and then take it all down. Logistics for doing this for a 12' x 6' battleboard was a tad too much. All my tanks, trucks, trees, fences, houses (1/72nd scale) was a bit much. That is why I am able to teach the class at the Legion, as I don't need to tear it down, as the battleboards remain setup in the basement. Thank goodness. baronvonben
