It is because they are 100% perfluorohexyloctane, and they form an "oily" layer on the surface of the tear layer which really helps prevent water evaporation from the lower tear layer. They also have some ability to dissolve/loosen thickened meibom and thereby work to open the meibomium glands. There are other good eye drops, but none compare favorably to NovaTears. Hopefully soon they will be over the counter soon in the U.S.
