About this product

Product Information

This swashbuckling adventure, based on the 19th-century novel by Anthony J. Hope Hawkins, stars Ronald Colman in a dual role as dead ringers Rudolph Rassendyll, an English commoner, and Rudolf V, the crown prince of Ruritania. Rudolf V is drugged prior to his coronation by Black Michael (Raymond Massey), a schemer with designs on the throne. Rudolf's entourage persuades Rassendyll to double for the king but Black Michael, having found out about the substitution, kidnaps the true monarch and hides him away inside the impenetrable fortress of Zenda. Rassendyll passes through the coronation with flying colors, but the real king must be found before his wedding date--and before Rassendyll and Princess Flavia (Madeleine Carroll) fall head over heels in love. Produced by mastermind David O. Selznick and generally considered director John Cromwell's greatest work, the film handles everything from roiling fight scenes to romantic interludes with supreme deftness while the photography and art direction is sublime. Led by the suave Colman, the all-star cast (Mary Astor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., David Niven, C. Aubrey Smith) stands as one of the finest ever assembled. THE PRISONER OF ZENDA is one of the true highlights of Hollywood's golden era.

I bought a large amount of 36 VHS tapes from this seller so far. Everything came as described and in good condition. Amazing seller with great customer service. They were always in constant communication with updates, and they tested all of their tapes again to make sure it ran smoothly before mailing, then threw in an extra tape for free as well. Great prices, great service, great seller, great products. I would highly recommend Ruby Deals and I plan to buy more tapes from them in the future!

This is a great seller. I've placed orders of 12, 9 and 6 vhs tapes and they've all been very well packed and the deliveries prompt. They emailed me once to tell me that they wouldn't be sending me a certain tape because, in their testing, they found that, even though it played well, it jammed when they tried to fast-forward and rewind...and they had tested it on more than one player. Their thorough testing prevented problems for both of us. They're great and I recommend them.

  • Very good movie.

Good lead actor and supporting cast. Very good screenplay and good music. Also very good direction. But this one feels better than the remake in the 50's.

  • 1937 Ronald Colman, Mary Astor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Anthony J. Hope Hawkins composed & published the novel upon which this all-time golden era classic is based. Although the cast is aptly led by Ronald Colman, and perfectly directed by John Cromwell, the supporting cast delivers remarkable performances including: Mary Astor (Antoinette de Mauban), Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (Rupert of Hentzau), David Niven (Capt. Fritz von Tarlenheim) & C. Aubrey Smith (Colonel Zapt). British actor, Ronald Colman gives the performance of a lifetime playing both roles as an everyday Englishman, Rudolph Rassendyll, who is a distant cousin of the Crown Prince of Ruritania, Rudolf V. Both men happen to be look-alikes, which is the key part of the story. The intrigue begins when Rudolf V's younger brother, "Black Michael" (Raymond Massey), lusts for the power of ...
