Australian Peter Weir's first Hollywood film tells the story of John Book (Harrison Ford), a Philadelphia cop whose life is altered while trying to help Rachel (Kelly McGillis), an Amish woman, and her son Samuel (Lukas Haas), who witnesses a murder in a Philadelphia train station bathroom. After discovering that the murder was committed by a member of his force, Book travels to Lancaster County with Rachel and Samuel and poses as a member of the Amish community to hide from his murderous police peers. While there, love blooms between Rachel and Book, and he finds himself drawn in by the honesty and simplicity of the old-world Amish lifestyle. Rachel Lapp (Kelly McGillis) is a very young widow. Her husband was killed in a farming accident leaving her and their young son Samuel (Lukas Haas) with his father. These are Amish people and their community and society is closed to outsiders. They use kerosene lamps, a hand pump for water, and horses and carts for transportation. Even their clothing is different, with hook and eyes instead of buttons or zippers, which are considered proud. Rachel and Samuel are on their way to visit her family members in another state, when in the restroom of the Philadelphia train station, Samuel witnesses the brutal murder of an undercover police officer. After hours of no success, Samuel finally spots the killer, no, not in the mug files, but inside a trophy and commendation case. The killer is a police officer! Book goes to his captain with this information, and within hours, he is attacked and wounded. To survive and keep Rachel and Samuel safe, they all have to disappear, fast. He takes her home to Pennsylvania to her father-in-law, where he collapses from his wounds. Days later Book regains consciousness in the Lapp family farm house. He was practically dead and a local Amish man had treated him with herbs. He is weak but recovering. Nobody outside of the Amish leadership can know about him, and their lives are in danger. His partner on the police force in Philadelphia has also been murdered, and the crooked cops are looking for him and the Amish too. Their very safety depends upon the inaccessability of the Amish people. Book is able to hide there for a while while he is recovering. During this period, he begins to embrace the simplicity of their lifestyle. Dressed in Amish style clothing, he fits in well and all goes well until a bunch of loud-mouthed outsiders try to make trouble. They know that the Amish are pacifists and can be pushed without worry of them fighting back. With Book, this is a mistake, but by fighting back his cover is blown. Eventually the crooked cops, led by his crooked boss, show up and Book is forced to fight them and defend the Lapp family. This is a very good movie and despite a little violence, it is still suitable for the entire family.

This film features a lot of things people who only saw him in Raiders of the Lost Ark wouldn't expect from Harrison Ford. He plays a cop sent to an Amish town 2 protect a murder witness from getting killed and ends up falling in love while doing so. And he's more sensitive in this 1 than he was in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
