You don't have to connect both, you can wire it up to just a heater or cooling device. Because it's a simple temperature +/- threshold limit and a switch, the temperature fluctuates quite a bit, so I wouldn't use it for an incubator.. (there's a better model in this product range for this). However, if fluctuations aren't a major drama, then this is perfect.
