Much-loved actor Charles 'Bud' Tingwell flew Spitfires and Mosquitoes for the air force during World War II. This book recalls his 75 sorties over the Eastern Mediterranean taking reconnaissance photographs of enemy targets. Follow Bud's journey from his early days as a young radio announcer in Sydney to his training and voyages across the oceans to Canada, Europe and the Middle East, to his experiences flying aircraft and dodging ground fire while doing his part in providing a valuable service to the Allied war effort. This is not just a book about Bud, however. It is also about the heroes who served Australia with honour and courage. Featured are biographies of all World War II recipients of the highest award for bravery in war, the Victoria Cross, and of recipients of other distinguished awards. This publication marks the 70th anniversary of the declaration of World War II on 3 September, 1939.
