Author Vance Randolph was an academic, without being a snob or "educated beyond his intelligence" (as we say in the Ozarks). He moved to the area and lived among the hill people for most of his life; writing over 20 books on the region. I think this one is the most interesting. Full of folklore, ghost stories macabre superstitions and silly rituals that used to be part of everyday life, and considered 'common knowledge', in the Ozarks. My own copy is full of notations my mother made in the 1970's on the practices she recalled from her childhood in Taney county Mo. in the 1940's.

I had to buy this book for an anthropology class, and since I'm from the Ozarks, this book takes on a special relevance for me on a personal level.
