  • Provocative, educational, emotional and frustrating

Whether the first or the fourth time you read this book it will make you cry. Gaines creates such powerful characterizations- you feel like you're reading about people you already know and grow very quickly to love, hate, cherish, feel sorry for, or feel proud of. It's an education into the black South from the 40's that is eye opening if you're not familiar with the era or even if you believe that you know/understand the strife and struggles of African Americans. How quickly and unfairly they were punished for any crime but especially against a white member of society stands painfully clear. Such obvious injustice that, at the time, was never even given a second thought from white America. I cannot recommend highly enough all of Gaines' books- though I found them best read in the order ...

  • Tries to be deep but falls flat

I bought this book in a bulk lot of Oprah Book Club books. I thought it was good but not great. I kept waiting for something major to happen but it never does. It tries to be really deep but I just didn't get it. I understood the point and what the book was trying to say but found it kind of flat. Starts story lines and never finishes them.
