About this product

Product Information

This anthology presents in chronological order a broad selection of texts by Claire Fontaine since her creation in 2004. Founded in Paris by James Thorn hill and Vulva Carne vale, Claire Fontaine radicalizes the legacy of conceptual art and institutional critique and creates texts that are as experimental and politically charged as her visual practice. The title of the book is lifted from the concept of "human strike" that first appeared in Titus 2, the second and last issue of a magazine confounded by Carne vale. Human strike is a movement broader and more radical than any general strike, it addresses our subjective complicity with everything that limits our freedom and shows the path to abandon this self-destructive behavior through departmentalization. It is a struggle aiming to end the inevitable harm we do to ourselves and others by living within capitalism and holding onto our prescribed identity. Human strike is a feminist practice because it allows subject^ to transform themselves and create new relationships that are non-instrumental and emancipator, where the love-force and the revolt-force can be reproduced. Through the concept of "magic materialism," Fontaine also proposes an approach that rehabilitates sensual knowledge and emotional intelligence, criticizing the hierarchy between intellectual and manual labor. Human Strike and the Art of Creating Freedom is the first English-language anthology of Claire Fontaine's influential and ground breaking theoretical work. Book jacket.
