  • no jazz, no swing

interesting that this movie was titled 'king of jazz', when in my opinion there was NO JAZZ in it! at least what i think of as jazz. i think of benny goodman, artie shaw, glenn miller, harry james as jazz. you know, the big bands swing! there was NONE OF THIS here! i don't know what you'd call the music in this movie, but i wouldn't call it jazz or swing, even though whiteman had indeed a big band, it was disappointing to me since i am a great fan of swing jazz and the above mentioned artists. i suppose this movie had some good points. some of the dancing was alright, and it was culturally interesting pertaining to the era it was from. would i buy it now knowing what it really was with none of what i call swing/jazz? no i wouldn't.

  • An historical musical snapshot of an era

It's main value lies in being a historical snapshot of an era. The story is merely an excuse to show the various acts and routines and not all of the music is jazz. Probably the best things about the blu ray is seeing (in several numbers) the first filmed appearance of a young Bing Crosby before he ruled the world of popular music and the gorgeous hi def color reproduction. It's hard to believe a film that old can look so good.
