I first heard Calexico a few years ago listening to NPR as I drove to work. NPR played a clip of 'Gypsy's Curse' between stories. It was raw, haunting and full of depth. It seemed like it was pulled from some sort of southwest movie soundtrack. Calexico's music is a unique and wonderful mix of influences, most obviously Mexican and western but at times it can have a folksy or even surf-guitar feel to it. Listening to this album tends to put me in a somber and intensely introspective mood. Many of the songs are instrumental and perhaps that's why the whole album has such a "soundtrack" feel to it. I've seen other reviews complain about Joey Burn's vocals because they seem disruptive to the otherwise sublime instrumental tracks but I think Burns' vocals fit perfectly with the mood of the songs. This album is a great introduction to Calexico and is a worthy addition to any true music-lover's collection.Read full review
Average overall album but a few great songs. "Gypsy's Curse," "the Ride". very cowboyish theme. not as good as the other album "carried to dust"
