Though I had never been more than a moderate DB fan I bought this to get a more complete overview of the whole body of work.Without a doubt(to me)Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmonns are the Doobie Brothers. The first cd and half of the second are amazing and show just how fresh, and diverse their sound was in those years.Once you get to the Michael McDonald/session musicians era everything grinds to a halt. The songs all run together and basically sound the same.I don't have an issue with MM,but, they should never have been called the Doobie Brothers with him.The third cd picks up with the more classic lineup and some great songs. The fourth cd is outakes, live cuts, demo's,etc, etc.
This is an absolutely fantastic compilation of the music to be found in the Doobie Brothers Library. This 4 disc boxed set contains not only all of the radio mega hits, but also all of the songs that are concert hits. The fourth disc is comprised of songs either previously unissued, or demos... a real treasure. The box set comes with a book that reflects on the bands beginnings , highlighting the many changes they have gone through from the beginning to the time of the publishing. Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald share their memories on the concept of various songs. There are also alot of fantastic pictures. This boxed set is truely a fantastic collection of the music that the Doobie Brothers have been entertaining us with for 35 years. the best rock and roll from the best band ever!!!Read full review
