An adventure that began with a young boy chasing his pet frog down a hole has lasted nearly a lifetime, as that boy has grown up to be a battle-scarred warrior of great renown. But now Jason, along with his powerful combat vehicle SOPHIA, has wearied of fighting. Since the creatures he long contended with have been destroyed, he has retired to a place far away from those harrowing memories. But even as he tries to forget those days, they refuse to forget him ...
One day, a stranger arrives at Jason's door. She explains that she used to work in a research facility, one that manipulated the tissues of the beasts that Jason thought were all destroyed. But something went wrong. The leftover tissue was not dead and began taking over the facility, forming into a biomechanical mass and annihilating everything in its wake. It has tunneled deep into the ground, creating a gigantic series of caverns where it has gone about creating more mutant beasts with the intent of taking over the world. When Jason hears this, he knows he has no choice but to fire up SOPHIA and head back down into the cold darkness to put an end to this menace once and for all.
Blaster Master: Enemy Below is Sunsoft's update to the popular series for the Game Boy Color. Players take on the role of Jason as he plunges back into that familiar nightmare world, both in SOPHIA and out of it, doing his best to fight back against the encroaching mutants. The game itself plays very similarly to its 8-bit predecessor on the NES, although it is important to note that this version is not a direct port. Rather, it gives you an all new adventure to experience. You'll travel mostly below ground, between eight different areas, searching for enemies to destroy and new items to discover.
At any point, Jason can hop out of SOPHIA, but through most of the side-scrolling levels he'll want to stay in the powerful craft. As he makes his way through the adventure, he'll find more powerful weapons for SOPHIA and even the ability to climb up walls and along ceilings. But Jason can't stay in SOPHIA for the whole game. Occasionally he'll have to climb out and enter the overhead battle screens, where he'll locate the important items he needs and locate bosses to destroy.
