Reliable, easy-to-setup older model wi-fi repeater/range extender for 2.4GHz signal.
Although these retail new for $70 and up (MSRP $69.99), I have purchased six used ones on eBay for less than $30 each including shipping, on auctions - the last two for under $23 each. All work perfectly and modestly extend the range of my router's wi-fi signal. Three expand coverage in three different directions where I have laptops performing various duties (and three standby/spares just in case.) Each is a 600mW (0.6watt) signal repeater/amplifier and must be installed close enough to the router or wi-fi signal source to receive 70% signal strength for reliable operation. I extended the range of one REC10 by installing an Amped SR1000 1000mW (1.0 watt) amplifier/antenna. When I chose to extend the range further I installed a series of increasingly powerful signal amplifiers (2watt, ... When I chose to extend the range further I installed a series of increasingly powerful signal amplifiers (2watt, 5watt), ending up with an 8watt amplifier/antenna that now provides a reliable signal to the pool and a second residence more than 100 feet away. Setup is simple. Plug it in. Look for it with your computer's Wi-Fi Network Connection software and connect. Open your browser (says not to use Firefox) and go to the address specified in the instructions (cannot post it here.) No need for Internet connection because the setup program is in the REC10. The pages are easy to understand. First scan for available signals and choose one (if you have more than one) that has at least 70% signal strength. If there are none strong enough available, move the REC10 closer to the router or wi-fi source. Easiest: Click: "Clone" and the program will setup the REC10 with the SSID, security type and code already on your wi-fi source. OR Type in the required information for the source (SSID, Security code); Rename the "Amped_REC 10" if desired; Set a security code for it. The next step takes about 3 minutes while the program does everything necessary to complete the connection. When the countdown clock reaches "0" everything should be working perfectly (it has for me each time.) Now any computer (with wi-fi) within range of the REC10 will have Internet access available. Even computers without wi-fi can be connected directly to the REC10's ethernet port with a cable. I have four computers connected to an ethernet switch which is connected to the REC10's port and they function well (up to the bandwidth speed of the REC10 which has not caused me any issues.) The setup program offers a lot of individually accessible settings if you're a geek, but the basic settings were all I needed. To ensure a better signal to one area I have one REC10 connected to my router through another REC10 in between. This setup works great because the second REC10 cannot receive a 70% signal from the router, but does receive a strong signal from the 8w amplified REC10. Inexpensive, reliable and dependable. I highly recommend the REC10 for any basic 2.4 GHz signal boost you need. One disclaimer: I do not know how well the REC10 will stream HD video, but the manufacturer's web page states: "High Speed Wi-Fi makes streaming HD video and web surfing a breeze." After a week still can't get it to connect
Thought the price was good so I bought it. Doesn't connect. The instructions that come with aren't helpful. Recommend you shop elsewhere. There isn't a flashing or solid light to let you know if you're connected. Not satisfied.
