Reviews
Hunger is Gay at her most lacerating and probing. . . . Anyone familiar with Gay's books or tweets knows she also wields a dagger-sharp wit., Powerful. . . . fierce. . . . Gay has a vivid, telegraphic writing style, which serves her well. Repetitive and recursive, it propels the reader forward with unstoppable force., A heart-rending debut memoir from the outspoken feminist and essayist. . . . An intense, unsparingly honest portrait of childhood crisis and its enduring aftermath., It turns out that when a wrenching past is confronted with wisdom and bravery, the outcome can be compassion and enlightenment-both for the reader who has lived through this kind of unimaginable pain, and for the reader who knows nothing of it. Roxane Gay shows us how to be decent to ourselves, and decent to one another. HUNGER is an amazing achievement in more ways than I can count.

Synopsis
New York Times bestseller National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist Lambda Literary Award winner A best book of 2017: Time NPR People Elle The Washington Post The Los Angeles Times The Chicago Tribune Newsday St. Louis Post-Dispatch PopSugar BookRiot Library Journal Booklist Kirkus Reviews Shelf Awareness New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and bodies, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined," Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care. In Hunger, she casts an insightful and critical eye on her childhood, teens, and twenties--including the devastating act of violence that acted as a turning point in her young life--and brings readers into the present and the realities, pains, and joys of her daily life. With the bracing candor, vulnerability, and authority that have made her one of the most admired voices of her generation, Roxane explores what it means to be overweight in a time when the bigger you are, the less you are seen. I use this product regularly, item was just as described ❀️ and just as expected upon delivery. Shipping was quick, item packaged professionally, packaged in a sturdy box rather than being put in a flimsy plastic bag, as so many sellers seem to do lately. Amazing value vs retail cost on this item, would definitely shop with seller again! πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—

  • Boring and repetitive

I was shocked at how badly written this book was. Gay is a professional writer after all. The syntax was often awkward and the repetition was very annoying. Almost 300 pages of constant self-loathing got tedious. Her message was clear very early on in the book and saying it over and over became numbing. One can only wonder why she ie not in therapy. Society does, indeed, treat fat people badly, but cannot be blamed for the body Gay has chosen to have no matter what the reasons are.

  • Good memoir

Interesting memoir of Roxane's body. I enjoyed the tension between the logic of why you've gained weight but the irrational feelings we, as women, go through. This was a book club pick and I'm happy to be able to find secondhand books and get more use out of them.
