  • Mancini for Mancini lover

When I was a freshman in high school, I used some Christmas money to buy The Best of Mancini and The Best of Mancini Vol 2. That led to a lifelong lover of this composer and his works. This CD contains much of what was on those two vinyl albums, including "Peter Gunn" and "Pink Panther, respectively considered the first officially cool TV theme and the coolest cartoon theme by many musicians and fans. If you doubt me, ask a saxophone player about "Pink Panther" sometime. Also includes what may be Mancini's biggest hit, "Moon River" (which was determined to contain the best-known harmonica riff of the 20th Century), "Days of Wine and Roses," "Baby Elephant Walk" (from "Hatari!" a movie starring John Wayne set in Africa), "A Time For Us," and a lot of other favorites. This isn't for everyone. A lot of people will consider the CD elevator music. And a few things are missing, such as the theme to "The Godfather" and "Love Story" (a great instrumental, even if you hate the lyrics when it's sung). It's worth playing to help a younger music lover to discover the magic that was Mancini.

  • One Cool, Jazzy Orchestra from years past

What rhythmic fun from Henry Mancini! Mostly orchestral (with choir on a few selections), this jazzy soundtrack-laden, one double CD, has the driving Peter Gunn, the sleek Pink Panther, and the Baby Elephant Walk. There are also more mellow tunes such as Moon River, Charade, and Romeo and Juliet. Great at perking-up a rainy day, this CD is fully recommended.

I love Henry Mancini orchrestra music, but this CD had too much singing. My favorites are Montovani and Jackie gleason orchestra....No Singing. Have a swell week...........Bob C
