This particular sound card works well in "somewhat older" PCs. It uses a PCI interface. I wanted to hook this card up to my stereo system via the computer. My intergrated sound card wound up burnning out when hooked up to my older sound system. Most likley due to an uneven resistance in Ohms. My guess ? The RCA inputs & outputs in 2 channel stereo is what grabbed my attention. Also, as the more modern PC's arrive on the market, available PCI slots are becomming less & less. Another reason is that this particular card is being slowly outdated, due to PCI express slots on mother boards are becomming more prevailent. So the price on this sound card has come down considerably.
I bought this used for a reasonable price. Works great with my DAW. Great sound. M Audio now has stuff with more inputs/outputs, but this suited my needs. Only drawback, no headphone jack. But card is powerful enough that I can hook up headphones to the standard speaker output. Though not at the same time (I could get a splitter). Wanna dabble in computer audio recording? Get this and reaper. Very inexpensive way to determine if it's for you.
Super easy install. Great sound quality in both playback and recording! Highly recommended for any older computer recording system ( mine is a Windows XP ).

I have not yet really used it yet. I am impressed that a product 11 years old still works and has current drivers available. The drivers are updated but the manual has not been. The XP instructions said to install the drivers first so that is what I did and then I shut down the PC, installed the 2496 in an available PCI slot and rebooted. One thing to note: Windows 7 64bit takes a lot longer to boot when the 2496 is in the PCI slot. At first I thought I had a defective card but the PC did boot and Device Manager says it installed and is running ok. I had to order some decent patch cables to hook up my Rolls MiniMix 2 to it and won't really know if it is working for a few days still. But so far so good. The seller was adamant I know he was selling as is because he had not used it in a long time and I appreciate his candor.Read full review
For those of you who are into keeping old equipment running like new, this card serves a great Legacy M-Audio product for your older PC studio. I had one for years but a Tampa storm zapped it right through the surge protection. I purchased this and snapped it right in place of the old one. My computer didn't even notice the difference and it came right up like the previous one always had.
