Great quality product. This is my first time preparing fresh ground coffee for my French press. A little bit of extra time spent for a great cup of coffee. Was disappointed that I had to go on line for a manual but it just shows I'm old school. As a retiree I'm so glad I now have the extra time to pamper myself in this way. I made the mistake of trying to work it before reading the manual. BIG MISTAKE. I clogged the grinder and spent unnecessary time cleaning it. After that, I had no problem. READ THE MANUAL.

I bought the Baratza Encore based on many reviews I saw that pointed to it being a great entry level burr grinder. Well, the whole point of upgrading to a burr grinder from my old whirlybird coffee mutilator was to get a consistent grind. As far as I can see, the Encore grinders produces the same wide-range of particle sizes that the old Braun whizzergigit did - anything from powder to chunks, when I was aiming for a middle-range grind for a drip coffee maker. I'm sure it'll grind very fine for espresso, etc. but for just a regular ol' cup of joe, it falls short.

So you bought another $50 "Burr" grinder and somehow it's hardly better than your $20 blade grinder? That is because it isn't a true conical burr. This one will deliver consistent grinds. My old Krups machine pretty much didn't yield consistently sized grinds. Coarse grinds yielded cloudy cold brew due to fine particles in with the coarse. This machine on the coarsest setting makes perfect cold brew with almost zero sediment. I used to have filter the cold brew after brewing with the Krups. As the entry model, you get no frills, but excellent performance with the encore. I love that you set the grind on top, so it's easy to see the setting. Hard to forget that you're dialed in for espresso when you are making cold brew, etc. Slower grinding, with no digital display, timer or scale, but works perfectly with your manual control. I only am missing the automatic shut off. Solidly built. Read the manual before using it. Don't too much at a time. Not over the line around two thirds up and it won't jam on you. If you need those other features, get a higher model by Baratza. It's a tank, not a toy. Highly recommended. Read full review

The first time I used it it worked great. Set the grind for 12 for an aeropress, and it seemed to do a good consistant grind. The second time I tried to grind, it would not work at all. Originally I thought it was broken, but it turns out the output shoot was completely clogged. I couldn't reach it with any of the supplied tools, so i had to stick a butter knife up there and free the clog. After that, I cleaned the entire machine again and it began working.

The only aggravating thing about this grinder is the silicone gasket. Not easy to get into place, but once I heated it in hot water I was able to get it properly positioned. Otherwise I am extremely happy with this burr grinder.
