Great Album - from a long-time fan
Disclaimer - I am a little stuck in the 80s and saw this band many times before the release of this album so my review of this album may be a little biased. As an ASU student in 1988/89, I saw the Gin Blossoms live several times at a dumpy little dirt floor dive called the Sun Club not far from ASU in Tempe, Arizona. This music often discribed as rock-a-billy is definately a late 80s early 90s sound, and instantly takes me back to those times. Doug Hopkins, the lead guitar player and author of most of the good songs would often play his guitar using his beer bottle to change cords. It was amazing to see - as the beer would eventually foam over and spill all over the stage while they continued to play and drink along with the audience. The Sun Club with its dirt floor did not seem ... They always finished each set with the coolest version of the Jefferson's theme "Movin on Up to the East Side" I ever heard. My only disappointment with this first album is that it did not contain their version of this song. Maybe they tried and it didn't work or maybe is something that only sounds great at 1AM after a long night of dancing and too much to drink. I don't know about nationwide, but "Hey Jealousy", "Mrs. Rita", "Until I fall Away", "Allison Road" and "Found Out about You" all recieved quite a lot of radio airplay in Phoenix throughout the 90's. Overall, a nice album to own.

The Best
Just an awesome look back at the music scene in this period of time. Doug Hopkins deserved a little better, as his songwriting was basically what made the band what they were in the first place. He was kicked out, had to suffer listening to the songs he wrote ride the top of the charts, and if I was him in the same situation, probably would have committed suicide as well. The Gin Blossoms carried on, and even with out Doug, they made it clear that they could have come out w/ a decent record every few years. Major Lodge Victory, their latest, is full of the stuff that made Gin Blossoms what they are capable of. Excellent songs thru out. However Robin Wilsons vocals are thin, a ghost of his "hey Jelousy" days and it sounds a bit sad to listen to. But they will forever be one of my favorite ...
