In this visually creative space adventure from the team that would go on to give the world INDEPENDENCE DAY and GODZILLA, a timid, glasses-wearing Egyptologist (James Spader) uncovers an ancient portal to another planet and is dispatched there forthwith--along with blundering, clodfooted government troops (led by Kurt Russell). The downtrodden populace they encounter, ruled by godlike, androgynous King Ra (Jaye Davidson, in his first role after becoming a star in THE CRYING GAME), must be led to literacy and freedom; Ra must be defeated; the intellectual must find his machismo; and our boys must return to Earth.

    This DVD arrived damaged. There's no evidence it was damaged in shipping although this DVD was packaged poorly and without the jewel box. However, the damage (as can be seen in the photos) doesn't seem to affect it's playability (at least so far). But there should be an eBay policy that says damaged DVDs should not be sold.

    A Classic of Science Fiction

    This is one of the classics of Sci-Fi cinema, a movie that spawned not only a (so far) 10-season television series, but also a second series beginning its third season, as I write this review! I think we've all had dreams about finding an ancient artifact that will give us magical powers or allow us to travel through space (well, maybe its just nerds like me, but nevertheless). Well, that's what happens to infamous Egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson, a man on the fringes of the academic community because of his insane theories about aliens and the pyramids. Long story short, he's proved right, and he gets to travel to a distant world where the gods of Egypt still reign supreme, and humanity is nothing more than slave labor.     stargate review

    this purchase was as a replacement to vhs i broke for my wife when it first came out. you know those boxes are not easy to open when you have sore joints. one of her all time favorites knew up wacthing kurt russel grow up kind of thing.

    I, for one, love fantasy type movies.... especially when DONE GREAT !!

    No wonder they continued it with the series which I never watched but heard it was great... JUST LIKE THE MOVIE. Definately my favorite repeat movie to watch.
