About this product

Product Information

Edward Zwick directs this sumptuously designed, action-packed period epic that stars Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren. Algren, a former Civil War hero, is adrift in 1870s San Francisco after the war, a lost soul struggling to stay afloat in a booze-soaked stupor. When he is recruited by the Japanese government to train the Emperor's army, he departs for the unknown shores of Japan and begins training the soldiers in American military tactics. But these skills are useless against a band of samurai rebels led by the proud warrior Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), and Algren is easily defeated. He is taken to a remote samurai village where he learns samurai warrior codes and ways of life, developing a deep bond with Katsumoto and sharing philosophical conversations with him. Caught between the feudal culture of the ancient samurai warriors and the encroachment of modern society, Algren is forced to choose between his own culture or Katsumoto's. THE LAST SAMURAI is lavish in its dramatic period costumes and intense performances, and will thrill fans of both historical drama and action films.

Offered as NEW but what I got appears to be a repackaged USED DVD: with scratch marks on both sides of the disk and it was secure in the case, not rattling around. Also, Seller added "Make Best Offer" in the description, so I made an offer and he countered at full price. It was a good price for a NEW item, and so I paid it, but why add that if you don't negotiate, and on top of that send out scratched up merchandise. All-in-all a bad experience that i will not do again. I think disk will play...

This experience was disappointing. If the seller does not want to field offers for an item, then don't add "Make Best Offer" in the description. Offers were answered with the seller stating they wanted listing price. We are talking about $0.62. I bought it because I don't play games. When The DVD is delivered I open it to find the packing for the DVD is a mess. I was promised good condition. Tape all over the box, looks like it was used for a desk. Part of the front is cut out. Do not recommend.

  • Well Worth The Time, Notable Lesson Learned As Well!

The Last Samurai embodies the true essences of two cultures who come together for power, control, and yes, War. Tom Cruise played his role quite well. He gave the role his own little twist of credibility. Even though he had struggled with alcohol during the first parts of the film, it seemed to bring out a deeper, darker side of him, yet making him appear mortal and weaker than his captors. This film portrays white men in a negative light. Their brutality and greed for money are most definitely present in the film. Algren (Tom Cruise) is firstly fighting to get paid until the Samurai win him over with their more honorable ideals. Samurai heroes act out of honor and dutiful service whereas western heroes are cold and detached and could care less about saving anyone until someone offers ...

  • The Last Samurai DVD

You honor me by reading this. Samurai and old school kung-fu movies are, at their core, Japanese westerns (or maybe I should say our westerns are American Samurai and kung-fu movies or whatever). The greatest samuari movie I've ever seen is "Seven Samurai," which was the inspiration for "The Magnificent Seven." In that legendary movie, there is a scene that has alway stood out to me as the defining saddness of the samurai. The greatest swordsman of the seven, a silent and brooding man, is slicing through the raiders that are attacking the villiage left and right. They are no match for him or his sword. But just as you think he is going to singlehandedly win this fight, his enemies fire off a pistol that fatally wounds him. As he staggers to his death, he takes a ...

  • Beautiful period piece with heart and spirit!

This film is set in the 1870's and stars Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren. Algren was a civil war hero and is recently returned from the campaign against the Indians. He's still haunted by what he's seen, and what he's done. Algren, who has become an alcoholic in an attempt to cope, is recruited by the Japanese government to train the Emperor's army. Japan at this time is struggling with its own identity as it attempts to shed its feudal image and become a modern power. Algren must train a group of soldiers to fight the Samurai who for decades protected Japan but are now perceived as standing in the way of progress. Cruise soon leads his soldiers in battle against the Samurai leader, Katsumoto, who is played by Ken Watanabe. After his defeat Algren (Cruise) ...

  • The Last Samurai

I have seen this movie quite a few times and every time I watch it I get a little bit more out of it. It is a long movie and starts a little slow but it is definitely worth waiting it out and taking the time to see a LONG movie. Tom Cruise plays an excellent part and is, in my books, totally different from his Mission Impossible movie roles. But you will not be disappointed with this one. The compassion he shows on the screen is something to see and makes you love his character for all the right reasons. This movie protrays the heart of a Samurai and gives a wonderful example of the dedication Samurai's give to their beliefs of life. I give this movie a thumbs up and recommend it to all. There is some violence that may not be suited for some children. One of the nice parts about this movie ...
