About this product

Product Information

EL MARIACHI: While earning room and board for a song, a down-on-his-luck musician gets into deep hot water when he's mistaken for a guitar-case-toting hitman in a small Mexican town. EL MARIACHI was produced by do-it-yourself Austin, Texas auteur Robert Rodriguez (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SPY KIDS) on a shoestring budget for the Mexican video market, but ultimately earned a major studio release. Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.DESPERADO: The unnamed Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) tracks down the last Mexican drug-lord "Bucho" with the help of his best friend and a beautiful book store owner (Salma Hayek). In a poetically violent style reminiscent of John Woo and Sam Peckinpah, the Mariachi takes on his entire army of henchmen in a dusty border town as an act of revenge for his injured musician's hand and the murder of his love. Robert Rodriguez's big budget sequel to EL MARIACHI also stars Cheech Marin (of Cheech and Chong) and Steve Buscemi (RESERVOIR DOGS).ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO: With ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez follows the further adventures of El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), the guitar-playing, gunslinging hero who has been leading a quiet life, but longs to get revenge for the murder of his love (Salma Hayek). When quirky CIA agent Sands (Johnny Depp) taps El Mariachi for a special assignment, he comes out with pistols blazing. Soon, a retired FBI agent (Ruben Blades), a drug kingpin (Willem Dafoe), a criminal on the run (Mickey Rourke), and a double-dealing federale (Eva Mendes) are all in on the action, which involves a plot to kill the Mexican president and shift the balance of power in Mexico. Handling the writing, direction, cinematography, and just about everything else, Rodriguez has crafted a tribute to the spaghetti Western films of Sergio Leone by placing his outlaw hero from DESPERADO and EL MARIACHI in an epic setting populated by numerous characters. Although it can be challenging to keep track of the unfolding subplots, the scenes involving Depp's badly dressed secret agent are the most intriguing and entertaining. Meanwhile Banderas eases back into the lead as the vengeful Mariachi, and Hayek and Blades make the most of their small but significant roles.

Great Movies Not so Great Plots.

I did enjoy the movies but it was quite apparent that all three movies had the same plot just different characters.

  • Good things come in 3s

There is some confusion as to the releases in this set, based on the reviews so far and the limited information in the amazon.com description. I hesitated to buy it at first based on the fact that the back of the outer case simply had credits and the typical info box for all three films giving the languages and aspect ratios of the films, but nothing as to the other content of the discs contained. Here is what is included in the set: Disc 1: El Mariachi (Special Edition) - 1.85:1 Widescreen Anamorphic/81 Minutes - Director's Commentary - Robert Rodriguez's Short Film "Bedhead" - "10-Minute Film School" Disc 2: Desperado (Special Edition) - 1.85:1 Widescreen Anamorphic/103 Minutes - Director's Commentary - "10 More Minutes with Robert Rodriguez: Anatomy of a Shootout" Disc 3: Once Upon ...

  • Awesome

Great movies. For starters, El Mariachi has to be the ultimate low budget flick, "ultimate" because it's so good. Desperado is the best out of the three, and if you haven't seen the bar fight, you're missing out. The movies are more about stylistic violence than realistic violence, so the movies (especially Desperado and Once Upon a Time...) are fun and not completely serious. The only things I could have done w/out were the bad language in the movies and the graphic sex scene in Desperado. Admittedly, the language is often funny, though. All in all, great action/shooter/Tarentino-esque movies.

  • Great movies

Three really great older movies. Great cast. Really enjoyed all 3 of the movies and seeing how the movie has transitioned; through out all three.

  • Entertainment without the Hype, Get this trilogy

Realistically this is the only way you should see these movies, all three in the same week so they make sense. Watch El Mariachi first, then Desperado, followed by Once Upon A Time in Mexico. It is by no means Academy Award material, but just very entertaining. Actually I find the so called Academy Award winners lacking in real substance or talent. Robert Rodriguez did all 3 of his movies for the same cost of half a Hollywood Blockbuster. And he still managed to get real stars to boot.
