THE DEAD remains one of the most moving, realistic zombie films ever. If THE DEAD 2 isn't quite as good, it's only by comparison. While most zombie films give the viewer the impression that zombies are restricted to the United States and Great Britain, THE DEAD shows us a zombie apocalypse in Africa. In THE DEAD 2, the plague spreads to India. Nicholas, an American working in India, once abandoned his pregnant girlfriend because he was afraid of fatherhood. Now his Indian girlfriend is pregnant, and her traditional father has forbidden her to see him. As if that isn't bad enough, zombies are overrunning the slums of Mumbai. To rescue his girlfriend, Nicholas must cross a desert, but he doesn't know the way. Luckily, he meets a little boy named Javed, who is smart, brave, has a good sense of direction, and the ability to find food and motor vehicles. I appreciate what the filmmakers are trying to do here: show us two people who are worlds apart but must overcome their distrust and work together against a common enemy. In THE DEAD, it works because the antagonists-turned-allies are grown men from different cultures. In THE DEAD 2, Nicholas doesn't hate Javed or his culture; Javed simply makes him nervous because Nicholas is still scared of fatherhood. Javed quickly wins him over because, even though he looks about ten years old, Javed is highly capable and an all-around great guy. So, no real conflict. We know Nicholas and Javed won't double-cross each other. Admittedly, too-good-to-be-true kids like Javed are a pet peeve of mine; it's a personal thing, not enough for me to take off a point; after all, some Star Trek fans actually LIKE Wesley Crusher! If you want an intelligent zombie action-adventure with blood but minimal gore (aside from one scene of intestine-eating), don't miss THE DEAD 2.Read full review
The Ford Brothers have truly established themselves as the master of the indie horror film, and their latest The Dead 2 is no different. The Dead was shocking and awe inspiring as to how they were able to pull off a film of this magnitude with such a micro budget, but they've stepped it up even further with their latest. This was easily the top zombie film of the year, but not only that, the indie horror film of the year.
