Good reading about the Battle off Samar
Interesting story of one of the bravest actions of WW2. The authors spends time in the early chapters giving the overall situation, the later chapters get specific about the actions of the Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts Hoel, Heermann, Samuel B Roberts and Johnson. My only wish was that he described the actions on the Escort Carriers a little better, from what I have read in other accounts, at on point there were aircraft from 5 or 6 different Escort Carriers on the desk of a single carrier rearming / refueling. Good book, worth the read if you are interested in WW2. The after action rescue was unfortunately a disgrace to the U. S. Navy.

This book is a compelling account of the Leyte Gulf, Pacific struggle between the Japan Imperial Fleet and The United States Navy Pacific forces. Told in the first-person, through the eyes of many U S Naval personnel, the book begins with the early careers of the sailors in the Navy, through to the Leyte Gulf battle. Day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute descriptions of the battle puts the reader on the bridge, on the decks, and below decks during the battle. Sailors of many ships give their accounts making the reader part of the battle. I recommend this book to all who served in the military, plus to anyone interested in the historical record of World War II in the Pacific. The accounts are mainly those of the American military, but some perspectives are also given from the Japanese sailors point of view. A great book!Read full review

The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors
I bought it for my husband, who is really into true accounts regarding WWII. He has read several books of this nature, so it's difficult for me to find new reading for him that he hasn't already read. This book was recommended to me by a friend who also has a deep interest in WWII history. My husband enjoyed the book, and finished reading it right away. He is now going to give it to his son who also enjoys the same type of reading. I really appreciate the opportunity to find books on ebay that he will enjoy reading as he is very particular and dedicated to reading as a hobby. It's so convenient to be able to 'shop' for these things on ebay as it always gives you a review about the book and I know that I'm picking out the right kind of reading for him. Of course, it helped that my friend gave me the name of the book, knowing it was something he thought Joe would enjoy...and he did! Thank you.Read full review

REAL "AMERICAN History"!
Since "American History" is no longer being taught, and when I went to school the tests were mostly about "What date did X happen", I found it very boring. This book tells the history of "What really happened", as told by the crews of these destroyers. Read this, and just maybe you will end up thanking Veterans when you meet them? History would have been my favorite subject had it been taught out of this book.
