Once you get past the bloody violence and cussing, it is a very good production on the founding of the Black Hills and Deadwood. The casting, sets, costuming, dialogue, writing and direction were all GREAT!!!! It shows a much more realistic view of the Black Hills than earlier westerns on the same subject. It is missing the twin city of Lead, where most of the Homestake Gold Mine was, the largest gold mine in North America - all taken from the Native Americans. I had a lot of relatives emigrate there from Europe around the turn of the century to work in the mine and establish businesses and even met Martha Jane Cannary and Charles Windolph.

This series is very engaging, once you get past the horrific use of the F word (2980 times) and other profanities. It also has some historical accuracies, as Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Jack McCall, Sol Star, and Al Swearengen were real Old West Characters involved with Deadwood. But the Worst Fault is that the series abruptly ended after the 3rd year!! In the words of the (recently) late Powers Boothe “we were looking forward to the 4th season, as they were negotiating for a fifth season. Then we were told that the Deadwood series was finished”! David Milch gets the credit for all of the profanities, which he tries to justify during a session with Keith Carradine in disc #6. Poor Keith Carradine had to listen to this egocentric Jerk Brag about himself for 60 minutes!! My condolences go out to Keith Carradine. In my opinion David Milch needs to find another occupation. Here's the browns, ochers, earthtones. Muddy streets and the unwashed slogging through that muck. Perfect. Here's gutter language as a cornerstone of communication. Here's the best of the human spirit demonstrated by murderous thugs and the most base flaws revealed in heroes. Here's rampant bigotry and misogyny alongside equality in the face of adversity and respect for the customs of others. Perfect. This is the reason that network TV is dead. This is the reason that the moral majority and their narrow minded defenders are neither moral nor the majority. Here's a taste of people on the raw edge of surviving, slaves to their lowest desires and still capable of altruism. Here's the advent of civilization raised out of the mud and muck. Here's a class of humans, rapists and pillagers of the earth for her mineral wealth receiving art, technology, spiritual growth and community into their lives. Flawed, you bet. It's a serial and the formula of serials means that stories are open ended. It's ensemble cast consists of more than a dozen regular characters and the quality and quantity of the individual characters tends to wax and wane. The storylines are occasionally formulaic and sometimes suffer from holes in the backstory. This is a fantasy world contrived to provide a backdrop for the message. Fair enough. Was the West like this? Sure, why not?. These stories are old as dirt. While there were genteel Victorians in the West and the devout and the agrarians and the intellectuals, the mining camps no doubt attracted few of these. HBO, to their credit let the stories be told with attention to detail, an unwavering love of the spoken word with all it's beauty and warts and the message that the human experience is of heroes with black hearts, wounded souls capable of great deeds, men and women of virtue compromising their values for some greater reward or a paycheck. Don't let your kids watch. Don't make your auntie watch. This is an acquired taste. For the uninitiated, be aware, the violence is both graphic and by the offhanded way in which it is resorted to it is intended to upset the sensibilities of a sterile society, the sex is perfunctory, blatant and loveless, the language is vile and pervasive.Read full review
I am a very big fan of a good western and Deadwood is the best I've seen. I read so many reviews that just complain about the nudity, the horrible foul language and even the gore. This HBO Masterpiece just doesn't hold back in depicting what the west was REALLY like in the 1870's. Deadwood is so authentic in every way. The characters, the wardrobe, the architecture, the whole set! All of it. It's truly like taking a trip back in time. Oh, and the character development. extraordinary! I have seen very very few Westerns with such authenticity. To name the few, the is "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman is the only one that comes to mind with the level of authenticity of Deadwood. "Wild Bill", with Jeff Bridges and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" again with Clint Eastwood come close. And finally "Tombstone" almost does it, but was a bit too Hollywoodish. But Deadwood has it all. From the production, direction, writing, wardrobe, character development, casting (Which is ingenious to say the least) and every other part that goes into the making of Deadwood is incredible. HBO's done it with "The Soprano's and now with Deadwood and I haven't even seen their other series shows which I'm sure are also fantastic. So if you want first rate entertainment and a look at what the old west was really like, Deadwood's your show.Read full review
I see this series a fascinating exploration of politics--defined as the use and distribution of power among groups over limited resources. It's an Hobbesian world where mutual suspicion reigns, where there is "perpetual warre", and where life can be "nasty, brutish, and short." It's no accident the earnest preacher in the first season has a cerebral disorder and goes bonkers. But it's not completely bleak, and just like Hobbes would predict, the people work together to create order and justice, albeit in informal ways, and in fits and starts. And, just like the real world, there are moments where love and mercy do, however briefly, get the upper hand. Along with that, great storytelling and acting.
I bought this movie based on the previews. I would not like to live during that time period as women were about equal to cattle or below. You get the drift about whores & women of class. They are all whores! There is filth re-created in this town that is unbelievable! There is a lot of foul language which is repeated & repeated. It is redundant. I wish I knew for sure if the word F@#%@ was created back then for sure. You will get an earful in this series. If you expect it be clean, it is not. This is a Dirty, Filthy Foul mining town with lots of Dirty, Filthy Humans. A true series about survival of the fittest! Aside from all this...It kept me coming back for every scene for the entire series.
I bought the 1st series because I had seen a few episodes from the 3rd series and wanted to watch the whole series from the start. I have also purchased the 2nd and 3rd series and am truly enjoying the charaters and plot. I am from SD so it has a lot of Historical meaning for me as well. It took me a couple of scenes toget by all the swearing but once you do you can concentrate on what they are saying and what is going on. I believe this series shows exactly how the west was and is not how Hollywood wants you to think it was.
If you like history or westerns or just a great story, Deadwood is it. You have to listen to catch and understand the Victorian dialogue, but it's just one of many historically accurate details in this fabulous series. It also makes a person's brain work a bit which is a plus! We live near Deadwood, so we can vouch for physical accuracy that really adds to the show. If you're opposed to cursing, don't watch this. The language is rough, but supposedly, historically accurate, although I'm not sure certain phrases were really the type of swearing the old timers would have used.
I saw this when it first came out years ago. It belonged to a friend so I didn't get a chance to really see it fully. There was too much visiting throughout the program. I do remember that there was a lot of "bad" language, but I'm looking forward to seeing it again. I'll just have to get past that. As I remember it's pretty close to the way things were back in the good ol' days. Before Calico Ghost Town (California) became such a tourist attraction it was very similar to what's in this series. When I was a child we went there before it became another "boom town"! Too many people now.
