A great classic film that focused on small town living and issues. The gossip, the rich, the poor, the back stories of each character is exposed. Beautiful cast of characters and actors who played them…definitely a tearjerker at times but the laughs help balance the melodrama.

Excellent storyline, plot, dialogue 95%. There was such an aura about this story… Values that are far different from today. In 1957, the victim suffered Great stigma for being great! Today it is seen in it’s real light – violence! BTW hope Lange has starred in various movies it is a wonderful actress. 15 years later she was a rape/murder victim in “Death Wish” (1974) and you can see 15 years later how rape is seen as a crime and victim is not stigmatized. Also, she is the heroine in “Pocket Full of Miracles” with Bette Davis (1961). How far we have come in only 60 years where people completely understand it is a total crime and the victim is utterly innocent and should be supported in every way after such violence and personal affectations from this horrific event. When you watch this movie you must remember it is 1957 to appreciate the situation in a small town where everybody talks about everybody else…Read full review

Beautifully photographed, "Peyton Place" revitalized the career of Lana Turner, who played Constance MacKenzie. A single mother of Allison (Diane Varsi), she had lied for 18 years that her husband was dead; in reality, she had conceived her daughter with a married man in New York City. This is the story of Allison's being told the truth in an argument with her mother and the resulting embarrassment that Allison felt. But more than that, we have more stories: (1) Rodney Harrington, the rich son of the mill owner, is in love with Betty Anderson (Terry Moore), the daughter of a foreman in the mill. His father (Leon Ames) will not have this relationship until Rodney is killed in WW2 after he and Betty have eloped. (2) Selena Cross (Hope Lange), the daughter of Constance's maid, has been raped by her trashy step-father, Lucas Cross (Arthur Kennedy). Eventually, she murders him and buries him in the sheep pen. (3) Norman Page (Russ Tamblyn), Allison's friend, whose mother has a strange relationship with her son. If you read the book, you learn that it is incestuous. But for this movie, she is just weird. (4) Michael Rossi (Lee Philips), the new high school principal, who would like to have a relationship with Constance, but she is too icy cold. (5) Doctor Swain (Lloyd Nolan), who helps Selena keep the secret of her rape. This movie was nominated for 9 Academy Awards but won none: Lana Turner (Best Actress; Diane Varsi (Best Supporting Actress); Hope Lange (Best Supporting Actress); Russ Tamblyn (Best Supporting Actor); Arthur Kennedy (Best Supporting Actor); Best Screenplay; Mark Robson (Best Director); Best Cinematography; and Best Picture. The controversy behind this movie and its book is beautifully depicted as a special feature to this DVD, which was originally told on AMC's "Back Story" series. You will also learn that while Lana Turner was making this movie she had a boyfriend killed by her own daughter in her Hollywood home and you will see excerpts of the real trial. Also, you will see parts of an interview with Grace Metalious, a New Hampshire housewife who wrote the book and suffered greatly for it. It is also a real deal to see an Ozzie and Harriet son in the movie. David Nelson plays Selena Cross's boyfriend Tom Carter, whom she tries to protect from her secret. He is also part of the recent "Back Story" interview. This DVD is loaded with other Special Features and is well worth the money.Read full review

Great 1950s colour movie with famous actors. Based on the sensational novel. The ancestor of later television soap operas.

I seen part of this on tv recently and was surprised how quickly I became engaged in the characters. I am not particularly fond of older movies, but this was the exception. Very emotional & a wonderfully written script.
