Hysteria is no longer a valid diagnosis, but this text marks the foundation of psychoanalysis. Freud's theories at this stage are sloppy(he recognized this later) and in my opinion he only complicated them more as he continued to make corrections. Breuer on the other hand is a better example of a hypnotherapist, and his observations are noteworthy. His subject in the first case study, Anna O. seems to have invented the psychoanalytic method by herself, in her autohypnoid states. It is from her case that Freud derived catharsis theory. Freud's own case studies in this text were largely failures.
