Finds all the shows you like and recorded them even if they change channels, networks, time slots, and length. Records 2 shows. Find shows by key words like actor or directors. I Use pilot as a key word to load record new shows to see if I like them. Can be linked with other tivos local to share programming. Its job is to keep full of your favorite cabe programming as well as be able to watch programs from places like Netflix and Amazon and a lot more than that. It does require a network connection and a subscription form cable and tivo to use all the features. I have 5 of these and love them all.

I'm 1 week into hooking up My new TIVo HD XL. It is my 3rd TIVo so I'm writing this from the standpoint of the refinement of the concept since its original roll-out. I've always felt that TIVo, as a basic concept, gave its user the control that is necessary to manipulate recordings and their selection criterion. This new unit does that well for the most part and find it quite usable and it has advanced (but not overly fast) throughout its life. I did find that the "Season Pass" didn't do a real good job on obeying the request to ONLY record new episodes, but insisted on grabbing every well identified repeat performance that must then be deleted. Which means that selection criterion differs in no way from the "NEW and REPEAT" selection. So I must make a manual selection of time and channel which isn't near as easy as pressing the "record" button from the guide. OK, I'm picky, but this is only programming and it is possible to do this correctly. The image and audio quality is fabulous and I'm glad I waited for TIVo to catch up to this technology. I have still not been able to devote the time necessary to figuring out why I can't access my TIVo recordings on PCs on the local network from the free downloaded software, "TIVo Desktop." This may be my own ignorance on this, but with the ease of the TIVo making itself network aware, I'm surprised that it was not able to become a part of the LAN workgroup just as easily. I've always felt TIVo's schedule guide was well done and am glad that it has maintained this high standard, unchanged. The addition of Youtube and download subscriptions like Netflix, podcasts, music/home video server, etc really makes this an extremely useful and diverse product. I intend to utilize internet access as soon as I figure that feature out. All and all I'm pleased with this purchase and since this is a programming based service, I'm sure that corrections can and more than likely will, be made down the road. Otherwise, in the case of TIVo Desktop, I guess my next point to evaluate will be the level of support I will encounter from TIVo's phone personnel.Read full review
I looked for this model because it is the last version that has two coaxial inputs for simultaneous antenna and cable inputs. Later versions have only one input which is in my opinion a severe downgrade in capability. The 1 TB hard disk is a great plus. The current Bolt series interface is a little nicer and faster than the this series but the deciding factor was being able to get my local TV channels. I had to delete a lot of data and watch lists which might have been easier if I had asked TIVO before investing a lot of time setting up channels. TIVO transferred my existing subscription for my old defective HD DVR to the new unit.

First off, I was using ATT's U-verse service for several years and then moved to a new home. U-verse is not available here at the new neighborhood. Charter Cable is it... period. What a downgrade this is in service, TV programing and, for the purpose of this review, equipment. I can't even get Fox News in High Def from these clowns but I digress. The point of this review is to discuss the Tivo Premiere XL as it compares to U-verse and Cable Company DVRs. The Tivo DVR is loaded with features which are very similar to the U-verse box and in many cases superior. The Charter rental DVR is a dinosaur by comparison to both the U-verse Box and my new Tivo Box. The Tivo Premiere XL does not run out of recording space. I have yet to exceed 25% of the recording space available which would have wiped out the Comcast Box's hard drive about 10% earlier in which case that box would arbitrairly begin deleting programs to make room for new recordings. The Tivo Box provides a much slicker, up to date, much easier to use and feature rich series of menu screens. I purchased the XL Tivo as opposed to the streight Premiere model for the extra recording space which I will probably never come close to using and the standard model would have worked fine for me and cost about a third of the XL retail. Of course I bought the XL on EBAY and didn't spend even near retail and got $12.95 a month Tivo service to boot! The other benefit to the XL is the upgraded THX sound system which I won't be able to fully enjoy until I add a THX certified theater sound system to my list of electronic goodies so I can't comment on the XL's THX feature at this time.Read full review
Tivo is great! My 2 year old Premiere XL died. Hard drive failure. Ugh! Regular TV for two weeks is killing me!!! I need my Tivo. I LOVE my Tivo. I miss my Tivo so much:( Just get one already! Getting one with a lifetime subscription is not a bad idea. You will use this thing until you or it dies. It's totally worth the $20/month and a few hundred dollars for lifetime subscription is THE SMART MOVE! If you're handy, you can get an xl with a 1TB drive and upgrade it to 2TB. Its tricky with Linux and such, but do-able. Premiere XL is THX certified, awesome! It needs a tuning adapter from the cable company to work, as well as a card. You will love Tivo. Get one, get you're T'von.
I bought a used TiVo Premiere with Lifetime Product Service, and am quite happy with it. I would not have bought a unit that required ongoing service fees; I have too much of that in my life. I appreciate that there is some continued value that TiVo is providing, but it is also collecting valuable data from me and marketing the services of other entities to me. It's a bit like Facebook charging for usage. On the technical side, I find it annoying that the TiVo default is to constantly be recording from the two tuners. It takes several steps to put it into standby, and even then the fan is generally on. The fan is already loud, as if it hasn't long to live, and I imagine the hard-drive is similarly worn, so I expect there is tinkering in my future, and this unit can't be more than 2 years old. There should be an option to have the unit go into standby automatically. How did it get an EnergyStar rating? I don't think there is a need to sing the praises of its positive features. TiVo is the gold standard. But maybe not forever.Read full review
If you have all or some of the cable premium channels like I do it is nice especially the season pass which will automatically record a tv series. The access to Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon, YouTube, Pandora and other internet items is nice as well. However, with all that is available on the internet through Tivo you would think that it would have internal wireless, but you have to purchase a wireless connection separately. Personally, if you are interested just the internet for streaming video ie Netflix and YouTube and Pandora, I would just get a really good blueray player most of the upper end blueray players have wireless access and hard drive space. You can pay a lot less and not have to pay aTivo subscription or cable subcription for an access card.
Time shifting made easy, well pretty close. They don't come with directions, they are on line. But I did have one hang-up and a call to Tech Support that was resolved. Then experimenting we set up a week of late night shows to record for more convenient times. Programming the Remote we needed some more help to sync it with the TV, an email response got that done as well. As you watch the shows, it asks if you want to delete them when it finishes. Not to shabby.

A great buy with lifetime service. I am really loving Tivo because of the extra features it brings. My wife is very happy with it since it was her birthday present. One thing that is VERY important, you need to get a special cable card from your local provider because the box will not send cable signals to the Tivo. You cannot record one channel while watching another, that is the Achilles heel of this box but the good thing is, we have another regular cable box just in case :) Fast shipment and thank you so much for being an excellent ebayer!
After cutting cable to reduce monthly bills, we needed a way to record shows with our OTA antenna. Since VCR is not an option (at least not a practical one), we decided to go with Tivo. What a great investment. This baby will pay for itself in less than a year and I couldn't be happier. I can now watch football and still have pause and rewind capabilities, not to mention slow-mo which I love! I couldn't see living without a DVR after having had one for so long now. Thanks Tivo!
