Oh my heck, Cliff RPM, Inc. ("cliff.rpminc")! Gosh, I hate it when someone writes a review but scores a device too low just because they don't understand the inherent limitations of the technology! Cliff, of *course* neither this DVD recorder nor other brands or models will be able to record in HD--well, they can record to an HD (hard disk), but not *in* HD (high-definition video), because DUH, standard DVDs and their recorders are not high-definition capable! The only reason this or some other DVD players have HDMI output is because they can do the upscaling to a somewhat HD-quality picture for playback. (But of course that will only be because of interpolation, since there is no more picture resolution information there than the standard-definition image.) Also, Cliff, your question about this having a digital tuner, when compared to your disappointment that it doesn't record in HD, doesn't make sense either, because "digital tuning" does *not* imply "HD picture"! There's a lot of digital programming that still *isn't* HD! And what does come across in HD to this recorder will just be "down-rezzed" to SD for it. It's still digital, though! So readers, you'll have to take Cliff's review here with a grain or two of salt, because he doesn't know that well what he's talking about. It's *his review* that's more flawed than this device must be (even though I haven't had experience with this model)! Happy 12/12/12, 12/21/12, Christmas, and New Year! First off, I have Owned Sony Products and collected them for nearly 20 years! I am only 25... And let me start off by saying this is a great idea, however flawed in many aspects and am glad Sony pulled it. Pros, Upconversion playing, HDMI hook-up,... Built in Tuner for Brodcast recording. Cons, Can not record Surround sound or 1080?! but has a digital tuner?! Extremely slow load time, up to 20 seconds. when switching between digital stations it takes 5 seconds to load each station. No listing information is displayed about digital stations. Why include HDMI?!?! Component on this unit is just fine. Other thoughts: This unit had great potential for people that didnt want to purchase a HD recorder. DVD's do a great job, but this recorder is missing essentials that make it a HD recorder! It is a great solution to converting HI-8 Cassettes to DVD if you wanted to store it or save it digitally. Sadly, it is missing Listing information and extremely, painfully slow in switching stations. HDMI is useless on this model unless you really want to spend the money on a HDMI cable. My sole purpose on purchasing this was to record DTV stations since I dont subscribe to CABLE or Satilite, It is just to hard to use and does not include the "up-to-date" features to make this worth buying. Sorry Sony, but even as a first player, it needs help. I know you wont produce another, but this shouldnt have even hit the market.Read full review
I decided to buy this recorder because it had the digital tuner that was a feature I felt would be useful. I had read some reviews about copyguarding problems but I was hoping for the best. When I hooked it up and went through the start up menu the tuner found all of the digital channels that I had availible. I made some test recordings of TV shows off of the tuner and from my satellite DVR and they seemed OK. As soon as I tried to record a movie from the DVR the recorder gave me a nastygram about copyguarding and ceased recording.I could see that if I was trying to copy an actual factory DVD that copyguarding would come into play but a movie that came over the Satellite? Come on Sony-- Get real! This thing is not exactly burning these movies at Bluray or even slightly HD quality. None of my of my three earlier Sony DVD burners had this problem. I pulled it back out and re-installed my old RDR-GX300 that I still feel is Sony's best consumer level DVD burner. I also have RDR-GX330s that record movies well without the copyguarding problems. No digital tuners though! Too bad.Read full review
I got this Sony to replace the JVC unit I had. I liked the JVC unit when it worked but I have had four of them and all but one of them has died and there are NO parts available to fix JVC products when they break, so I do NOT recommend any JVC products any more. This Sony unit is working fine and if I decide I need another recorder down the road I will look into buying another Sony for sure. Picture and sound quality are excellent so I could not be happier with this unit. Easy to use once I got used to how it works compared to the unit I was using.

it is preaty much the only option if you are looking for aDVD recorder with a Digital tuner. It works well (so far) changing Digital chanes taks 2 seconds and that could be annoying. Recording is good. QAM tunner is also nice.
