This book gives clear instructions and wonderful illustrations, both photo and line drawing, for a large variety of fabric manipulations. It tells many ways of creating texture in fabrics; ways to make flounces, godets, and ruffles in a variety of ways; shows every kind of pleat I have ever heard of; shows how to smock; and many other fabric manipulations. Some are done by hand and some involve machine stitching. My rule is to not buy a book unless it has at least three things in it that I will use. This book has five techniques I want to try right away and several to experiment with later. I found the book at my local library and checked it out. Then I renewed it for another two weeks. By the end of that period I knew I had to own a copy. How great to find it on eBay!
If you are a quiltmaker or a dollmaker you will love the detailed instructions in this book! If you want to make beautifully detailed fabric trims that the most complex sewing machine cannot do, this book will teach you how to easily make amazing padded quilting, ruffles, pleats, bubbles, folds, pintucks, whatever! I could see myself turning the instructions into making amazing christening gowns, doll clothes and childrens dresses even though I don't have children! Then, I thought of all the decorative items that I could make; pillows, valances, table linens, clothing, etc. This book just seems to inspire a sewer/quilter to want to make things if only just to try out so many of the various techniques that are so well explained and illustrated in this book. This book has detailed instructions for making hRead full review
This is an amazing book. It offers inspiration in a variety of techniques for manipulating fabrics: stitching, pleating, quilting, smocking, gathering, ruffling...and more. The techniques are not shown in the context of a specific project to complete, so if you are looking for a project book this is not a good choice for you. This book is more of an inspirational book for sewing machine users, in much the same way that a knitter might use a stitch dictionary (although I imagine you could do some of the techniques by hand too- it would be extremely time consuming though.) This book would be a good choice for anyone who is interested in designing with fabric: art quilters, fashion, costume and accessories designers, fiber artists. The book is black and white. Now, normally I prefer books with color photographs- and the more colorful the better. This book is an exception! It doesn't need to be colorful because the designs shown in the photos are constructed from plain muslin. I think the book is stunning in black and white. Overall I think this book is truly inspirational, and I gladly give it 5 stars.Read full review
Great compilation of fabulous fabric techniques. I have never seen/used many of these and I find them fascinating. I would have loved to have seen some color photos and the different applications used in actual garments.

I love this book so much that I bought it to give as a gift to one of my graduating students! It really is a treasure trove of information about hundreds of ways to work designing textures on fabric.
