Arnold Schwarzenegger is perfectly cast as Quaid, a 2084 construction worker haunted by dreams of Mars in this crowd-pleasing science fiction spectacle. Against the wishes of his sexy blonde wife (Sharon Stone), Quaid goes to Rekall, a company that implants artificial memories, so he can "remember" visiting the red planet that is now being settled by human inhabitants. However, Quaid is actually an amnesiac secret agent from Mars--or is he? Enemy agents led by a thug named Richter (Michael Ironside) start trying to kill him before Quaid remembers anything more. Bullets and bone-crunching mayhem follow in large doses as Quaid heads to Mars to deal with mutants, ancient alien races, and Cohagen (Ronny Cox), a greedy capitalist controlling the colonists' air supply, in an effort to remember his real identity. TOTAL RECALL is based on the story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick and was a big box-office hit, helping to firmly establish director Paul Verhoeven as a specialist in darkly satiric, blood-drenched genre films. His next stop: BASIC INSTINCT, also with Stone.

A prime example of early 90s action at its finest.
The following review contains spoilers, and I suggest you not to read the following paragraph. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Douglas Quaid, a construction worker with the perfect wife (played by a gorgeous Sharon Stone), and a seemingly normal life. Until one day, Quaid starts becomes so obsessed with Mars that he visits Rekall, for a relaxing virtual hoilday weekend in hopes of getting those dreams out of his head. Unfortunally, his memories are now erased with no way to remember his true identity. Things become very dangerous for our hero as Stone turns into a deadly femme fatale hired by Rekall to "look after him." Pursued by mad assassin named Richter (played by the awesome Michael Ironside, see Cronenberg's Scanners, and see what I mean!), and power-hungry dicator Vilos Cohagen (Ronny ... Make-up mastero Rob Bottin (The Howling, Carpenter's The Thing) provides the bizarre, out-of-this world effects for the mutants along with the character of Kuato hidden inside actor Marshall Bell. The New Brutalism architecture of Mexico City brillantly captures the feel of a futuristic Earth in the year 2084. The special effects were very groundbreaking for its time into bringing the brutal, red-colored look of Mars to life, and they're still a hell of a lot more convincing almost 20 years later than phony-baloney CGI thats being used in movies lately. Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall is a movie I saw a million times when I was in high school, and it definatly stands as one of Arnie's best films along wiht Predator and Terminators I and II. In building my Total Recall collection, I already have the Carolco VHS tape, and I have just purchased the Mars-shaped tin on eBay being my secong bid. Enclosing are the disc, and the booklet containing concept pictures which certainly beats the regular DVD plastic case any day of the week. In closing this review, I am very glad in purchasing this product at a reasonable price. P.S. I may be planning on looking for the poster.

Totall Recall gets lost among Arnold Schwarzenegger lure because of the success of the Terminator series and other earlier hits... but buried in between in 1990 was the smash hit TOTAL RECALL which featured a still young Arnold Schwarzenegger, a gorgeous Sharon Stone, and Rachel Ticotin. Also lost is that Total Recall is a futuristic thriller that really set the groundwork for future Arnold movies (End of Days, etc) and future scifi films on a similar premise - the conflict between the power of mind, memory and science... even movies like Eternal Sunlight of the Spotless Mind owe Arnold some credit. Just plain AWESOME
Total Recall - Awesome, Plain and Simple One of the coolest movies to come out in the 90's. Total Recall features Arnie vs Arnie, and has one of the most original plots I've ever seen in an action movie. The action scenes are awesome and the special effects are really good (amazing for their time). The cast is great... Total Recall just kicks butt, plain and simple. Final Verdict: 5/5 Rent or Buy?: Would you buy one of the best cars on the planet? Of course you would, this is one of the best Arnie films ever made, so buy it!
