But six years after this extraordinary feat and aged only 34, tragically, Pantani was dead. Discovered in a cheap Italian hotel, he died alone apparently from acute cocaine poisoning.     Worthwhile companion to the book

    I must confess I found the "recreated" scenes using an Ultegra equiped replica of Marco's beautiful Campagnolo equipped 1998 Bianchi slightly off-putting but, that aside, having historical footage of some of his great rides and interviews made this a great companion to the book of the same name. The nature of the two medias mean that they bring complimentary strenghths to the telling of the story of a troubled man whose short life and career has given some of us unforgettable memories of some of the greatest performances seen in road cycling.
