Synopsis
THE CLASSIC ACCOUNT OF ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC BATTLES OF WORLD WAR II "A Bridge Too Far" is Cornelius Ryan's masterly chronicle of the Battle of Arnhem, which marshalled the greatest armada of troop-carrying aircraft ever assembled and cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-Day. In this compelling work of history, Ryan narrates the Allied effort to end the war in Europe in 1944 by dropping the combined airborne forces of the American and British armies behind German lines to capture the crucial bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Focusing on a vast cast of characters -- from Dutch civilians to British and American strategists to common soldiers and commanders -- Ryan brings to life one of the most daring and ill-fated operations of the war. "A Bridge Too Far" superbly recreates the terror and suspense, the heroism and tragedy of this epic operation, which ended in bitter defeat for the Allies.

  • A Bridge Too Far

I thought this book was well written and enjoyed reading it. It followed the British and American landings of D-Day. It pointed out how things could have easily gone one way or another during the campaign. How some very incompetent people were in charge of our soldiers and how the ego's of Eisenhower, Montgomery and Patton got in their way and trickled down thru the ranks of command. This was also very true on the German side of the war. However, the best books I have ever read about this part of WWII, was the four books of "Donald R. Burgett". He lived the experience of the Normandy Invasion and the aftermath that followed. (I found all of these books available on EBAY.) It was actually Donald R. Burgett's 4 books that the movie "Band of Brothers" was taken from. They are a fast read and ...

  • Great book

Ryan does a great job at looking at both individual and a large picture of Operation Market Garden. I just finished reading September Hope on the American experience over there. I am still reading A Bridge too Far. Very enjoyable. It is a very easy read. We are taking a tour to Arnhem in June as part of larger tour and I wanted to read these books to get a better background on this operation. I was not disappointed.

  • A Bridge Too Far, Cornelius Ryan WWII Battle of Arnhem

I had been searching for a copy of this book for quite some time and was thrilled to find it in ebay. It is an excellent historical depiction of the Battle of Arnhem in the Netherlands and all the key characters whose best laid plans failed to deliver the resounding victory they anticipated. Cornelius Ryan provided an epic expose of this WWII battle. Great writing, a good read, and lessons to be learned.

  • Magnificent presentation of the detail of a major WWII action

Absolutely spell-binding, the detail of the entire Market-Garden action. This is far more than other accounts of the full event, from it's conception to the tragic conclusion. Mr. Ryan has obviously done an incredible amount of research. I look forward to reading more of his works.
