This particular lens, much like the other "L" series Canon lens is built like a tank. So, I suspect it will last longer than me. The image quality is very good, there is really very little or nothing to complain about image quality. They are a bit bulky and heavy - but match up nicely with a 6D or a 5D Mk III which is what I have. My other kit is Olympus and Lumix micro 4/3s so you can imagine how I can feel the difference with a lens like this one. But I'll say it again - image quality is as about as good as it gets in a zoom lens. I don't own a 300 mm prime from any brand so I could not compare the 300 mm end of this lens to a 300 mm prime. Besides, knowing the price and size of a 300 mm prime lens, likely that's not an option for me.

This lens was recommended to me by a neighbor who has won 3 Emmys for cinematography.... he's a very very talent man. He told me he felt the lens isn't large and obnoxious... "big lenses" tend to make your subjects nervous because you're swinging around an ultra long lens. This lens is short and stubby. But it's 300 mm gets in close without you making people feel uncomfortable. And it isn't all that heavy. I so love this lens.

I own a lot of Canon L series lenses. I like them all. Perhaps I am not as picky as some users. It is easy to say that they are heavy, expensive, or not optically flawless. Unfortunately Canon is constrained by the physics of optics, and the realities of manufacturing. You cannot build a perfect lens at a rational price point. I bought the 70-300 as a lens to leave on my camera. I like to be able to grab a camera and get a shot off with minimum down time. This lens works well for me for that purpose. It will handle most any situation that I come on from a portrait to a perched eagle. If it's all I have and I need to shoot a wide angle, I take multiples and stitch them together. It is a manageable size and weight, and I have good success with hand held shots. If I could only have three lenses, it would be this one, a 24-105, and a 400mm DO. Could this lens be better surely. It could weigh nothing and be free. I give it five stars, and I think it deserves it. Read full review

It's a Canon L lens which means quality and toughness. It is only F/4-5.6 aperture which means you'll have to crank up the ISO if you want to shoot with a fast shutter speed in any kind of subdued light. That said, For the price you get a great telephoto zoom lens with instant focus and a two stage IS. I love mine. Rich

This lens is the crowning touch for my camera kit. I can now travel with an Canon ultra wide 10-22mm, and a Canon 24mm-70mm L series and now the 70-300mm L series. That should cover the gamut of most of my photographic needs. This lens takes gorgeous sharp pictures. I think the price of these things are way out of line tho. I did get this for a good price because it was used and in very good condition but even then I think it is price fixed by the company.
Great quality, as to be expected from "L" series Canon lens. Not sure if "Is it a good value" is actually relevant in this case. There are good cheaper lenses. But, if you want the best, it will cost. And this lens is absolutely excellent. Heavy, due to metal construction. Image super sharp. Very easy to operate quickly. Internals must obviously be perfect as the motor focuses quietly, accurately and flawlessly. Colors are more vibrant than with my previous cheaper lens. No regrets..

I love this lens! It takes beautiful photos from flowers to sports with no image quality issues at all. Having used the 70-200 f2.8 I am pretty impressed with how close they are in image quality. Bohkeh is very nice too! One issue for me is how loud this lens is. For the price though I will trade that for the awesome photos I already have!

This lens is built like a tank. It is a little on the heavy side but shorter than the 70-200mm F2.8 lenses. The extra 100mm of length is a plus as well. The image stabilization works well for hand shooting but I have had a few missed shots. My fault of course! I pulled this lens out of the box, mounted it on my RP and was blown away. It was tack sharp. The best part was yet to come when I mounted it on my 80D crop sensor camera. The extra reach of a cropped camera and the sharpness of this lens really, really, blew my mind. I am a very happy camper. As a added bonus this lens mounted on my camera fits in my camera bag ready to take out and shoot.

I have used it many times now and the quality of the photos are sharp. The only minor issue is the IS is quite loud, I’m not sure why but it does not affect the actual stabilization of lens... Great lens for the $$$ Thank you!!!

Love the zoom range. Lens is very compact, great for packing and travel. Producing some very nice pictures (subject to user errors) The lens is slightly on the heavy side, (when compared to the previous lense 50-250 zoom). I am not a professional photographer but just wanted something a step up in build quality, This is definatly it. Bought mine used and it appears to be in flawless condition.
