    Ashes of Time - Not Redux

    This is the original. I wanted to compare this to the redux. As stated on several movie sites the original was dark in places and the director wasn't happy with the theatrical release. There are several extra minutes of footage that were removed from this version that is worth the time to watch. Nothing that changes any of the storylines just kind of like watching a deleted scenes segment. I would recommend this for any fan of the genre in general and the movie specifically.

    A must-see flawed masterpiece from Wong Kar Wai but don't get this version!

    "Ashes of Time" is an extremely frustrating movie ( especially if you are familiar with Jin Yong's "Condor Heroes" series) but it is a brilliant, albeit almost incomprehensible work of art ( at least upon first viewing), and a must see for all Wong Kar Wai fans. I should know, I've watched the VCD version of this film in 1999 about 10 times to be able to finally figure it out. The remake, "Ashes of Time Redux" , is much more accessible and the re-mastering is beautiful, however it left out about 7 crucial minutes ( at least to me ) from the original. I wanted to see the "original" 1994 version and my nearly decade old vcds won't play on my new DVD player. So despite my misgivings I went ahead and bought this DVD version and got what I paid for.
