When a notorious, highly sophisticated counterfeiter murders his partner, Secret Service agent Richard Chance (William Petersen) launches a furious vendetta to capture the man responsible. But master counterfeiter Rick Masters (Willem Dafoe) is always just one step ahead of Chance in William Friedkin's thrilling, suspenseful crime drama. With violent shoot-outs and a turbulent chase scene reminiscent of Friedkin's own THE FRENCH CONNECTION, TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. broke with tradition by making the ostensible hero as morally reprehensible as the villain he pursues. Clashing with bureaucratic obstacles, Chance is forced to break the rules in order to procure cash for a sting operation, but the risks he takes snowball into an avalanche of violence and moral repercussions, leading to a morally ambiguous cul-de-sac from which there may be no return.

    One Of The Best 80's Film You Never Saw

    One of the best films of the eighties. Director William Friedman delivers one of the best cinematic offerings of his directorial career. William Petersen (Manhunter; C.S.I.) plays Richard Chance--a Secret Service agent hot on the trail of Eric Masters, a master counterfeiter played by Willem Dafoe, (Platoon; Spiderman; Motherless Brooklyn) who murdered Chance's partner. Released at a time when the highly-stylized Miami Vice was everywhere--this film very much holds its own; as it has aged ever-so well, nearly forty-years later. Also...contains one of the most memorable car chases ever captured on film.

    Thrilling "in your face" feature. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. "To Live and Die in L.A." is definitely a timeless classic... right up there, for example, with the high standards of drama and conspiracy of "The Hunt for Red October" and "The French Connection". Incidentally, William Friedkin directed "To Live and Die in L.A." and "The French Connection". True talent in every way, shape, and form that BLASTS from the screen.

    Willem Dafoe Props It Up

    The acting is just OK, but Willem Dafoe stands out in his early role. It is intriguing to watch how the SS agents dig their graves deeper. The gun violence scenes are amateurish compared to current movies, but that should be expected.

    Cop Versus Conterfeiter!

    This is an engaging movie with a nice plot and intense characters. I enjoyed it very much. It is a long battle between a savage counterfeiter and a cop whose partner ws killed by the counterfeiter two days before his retirement. Our hero will use any means to bring the villain to justice. The villain's demise is richly deserved.
