Reviews
"...a useful update on scholarship in a variety of intellectual and creative fields in Naples in the eighteenth century...Naples in the Eighteenth Century is to be commended for drawing together work in highly distinct fields...which originated in the same city and century and in such a way as to be of interest to scholars not only of the Enlightenment, but also of European history." Canadian Journal of History, "a welcome addition to the material available in English on the history of the Italian South." Jrnl of Interdisciplinary History, 'Girolamo Imbruglia's edited collection of essays is the most comprehensive synthesis of current research on eighteenth-century Naples available in English.' Modern Italy, "this book is welcome...The book also contains a useful bibliography...The book is a valuable source on the Neapolitan state, society, and culture during the Age of Enlightenment. It will be particularly useful to students interested in this period in general and in Italy in particular." The International History Review Dec 2001

Synopsis
This volume of essays offers a series of new insights into the "age of the Enlightenment," not only in Italy but throughout Europe. In its political reforms, intended to attack feudalism and the Church and to modernize the economic and judicial systems, Naples was influenced by European culture. But Naples also exercised a strong influence on European culture: the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the musical culture of the city, had great importance in shaping the modern, enlightened culture of Europe., In 1734 the kingdom of Naples became an independent monarchy, but in 1799 a Jacobin revolution transformed it briefly into a republic. In these few but intense decades of independence all the great problems of the age of the Enlightenment became apparent: attacks on feudalism and on the power of the Catholic Church, the struggle for a modern economy, and aspirations to change the administrative machinery and the judicial system. Yet Naples was also the city visited by Winckelmann and Goethe, the city of Sir William Hamilton, of the study of Pompeii and Herculanum, and of the greatest musicians of the age. This collection of essays addresses a range of issues in the city's political and cultural history, and demonstrates the city's importance in shaping the modern, enlightened culture of Europe., This volume of essays offers a series of insights into the 'age of the Enlightenment', not only in Italy but throughout Europe. In its political reforms, Naples was influenced by European culture. However, Naples also exercised a strong influence upon European culture and helped shape modern, enlightened European culture.

Item arrived in even better condition than described- just about mint, and with a cellophane protective cover, which saved me time from applying one myself. All 3 of the essays in the volume were interesting, ie what I was looking for in terms of informational value regarding the New Deal; it was a real fortunate find. The item arrived promptly, was well (not overly) packaged, and the transaction was smooth and easy. I’d work with this seller again, thanks!
