Personnel: Gregg Allman (vocals, Hammond b-3 organ); Duane Allman (guitar, slide guitar); Dickey Betts (guitar); Berry Oakley (bass guitar); Butch Trucks (drums, timpani). Recorded in Washington, D.C. just a few months before the performance captured on the band's seminal LIVE AT FILLMORE EAST album, this disc concentrates on the bluesiest aspects of the Allmans' sound.

NotesRecorded live at American University on Sunday December 13, 1970, at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. (The CD is drawn from both shows) the Allmans were at a crucial stage in their development on that December night, having just returned from shows at the Fillmore East in New York on a tour promoting their second album, Idlewild South. Three months hence, they would return to the Fillmore East and perform the show captured on their epochal Live at Fillmore East album. So, the band playing at American University is near to the best the group could be. The playing is fierce, especially the interaction of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, with a solid 20-plus-minute version of "Whippin' Post".
I admit to being a purist and will readily plunk down money for just about any ABB recording with Duane and Dickey on it. That stated, this American University 12/13/70 CD is better than some of the heritage releases and grey market/trader finds out there. It's a good clean combo soundboard/audience recording of 'the original six' on a great night. If you don't own At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach, get them first. But if you have them in and thirst for more Duane, this is a great one! Highly recommended.
