I bought this Paul Schrader film because it is one of the few Mishima-related films that has English subtitles added to the Japanese dialogue. The other such films I have come across are Kon Ichikawa's 1956 "Enjo" (based on the Temple of the Golden Pavilion) and Isao Yukisada's 2005 "Spring Snow" (based on the Mishima novel of the same name). It was fascinating to see Schrader's vibrantly colored adaptation of "Temple of the Golden Pavilion" in contrast to Kon Ichikawa's black and white film. Talented Japanese actor Koichi Sato appears as the frog foot. Schrader's adaptation from "Runaway Horses" was interesting in that this novel is the sequel to "Spring Snow" in the four novels from the Sea of Fertility Tetralogy. The Paul Schrader film answers the question of why Mishima had the protagonist in the four novels die at such a young age. It is said that Mishima committed suicide on the day that the last of these four novels was sent to the publisher. Dislikes. The single deleted scene, which is visually gorgeous, should have been included in the main film. Why bother setting it aside in a "chapter" and saying it would have made the film "unbalanced" time wise? There is another edition of this film that includes the BBC documentary on Mishima's life. I have not seen this documentary that could fill in more gaps in Mishima's biography, works, and point of view. I ranked this film as "good." Perhaps it should be higher ranked, but most reviewers seem to set a higher standard for any film related to Yukio Mishima works.Read full review
An artsy movie based on the life of Yukio Mishima, a post WWII Japanese author who started a small private army of a handful of acolytes. Philip Glass' score adds to the soaring, tense atmosphere building to the end of the movie, when it all comes to a crescendo. Roy Scheider narrates parts of the dialog in English so you do have a few breaks from reading subtitles.

This film is more for edification than for entertainment: watch to learn, not so much to enjoy. The stylized versions of 2 of his works are of particular artistic interest.
